WELCOME TO ANN ARBOR!
THE UNIVERSITY CELLAR was established in 1969 as the student bookstore for the
University of Michigan in response to pressure by students for lower prices on books and supplies. It was started with
a grant from the Regents and student fee assessments, has both students and faculty on its Board of Directors, and is a
non-profit student organization. The Cellar has now been active for over ten years in keeping local prices as low as
possible-but we cannot let our guard down-we need your support as customers, workers, and board members to
cont;nue our efforts.
THE UNIVERSITY CELLAR is located on the ground floor of the Michigan Union build-
ing on central campus. During the first three weeks of each term we also set up a second temporary "rush" location
in the ballroom on the second floor of the Union to handle the large volume of coursebooks and supplies, then move
everything back downstairs. (We also have a branch store in the North Campus Commons for Art, Architecture, Urban
Planning and Music books and supplies).
Here are a few hints to help you survive your first bookrush at UM:
o BRING YOUR CLASS SCHEDULE WITH YOU TO THE CELLAR.
o IN THE BALLROOM, YOU'LL FIND COPIES OF YOUR PROFESSORS' BOOKLISTS WHICH TELL YOU
WHICH BOOKS YOU'LL NEED TO BUY-YOU CAN BUY YOUR BOOKS BEFORE CLASSES START.
o ALL YOUR BOOKS AND SUPPLIES ARE DISCOUNTED TO THE LOWEST POSSIBLE PRICES. NEW
COPIES OF BOOKS ARE 5% OFF PUBLISHER'S LIST PRICE; USED COPIES ARE 25-50% OFF LIST.
THE CELLAR BUYS USED BOOKS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND HAS THE LARGEST SUPPLY
IN ANN ARBOR-AT THE LOWEST PRICES.
o THE BOOKS ARE ARRANGED IN OPEN STACKS BY SUBJECT AREA SO YOU CAN LOOK THROUGH
AND CHOOSE THE ONES YOU WANT. THERE WILL BE STAFF TO HELP YOU. THE CELLAR STOCKS
ALL BOOKS FOR CLASSES IN ALL UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES.
o TO AVOID MID-DAY CROWDS, TRY SHOPPING DURING OUR MORNING OR EVENING HOURS.
o MAKE NO MARKS IN YOUR BOOKS UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN TO CLASS-KEEP YOUR
REGISTER RECEIPT. IF YOU DECIDE TO DROP A CLASS, YOU CAN RETURN THE BOOKS WITHIN
TWO WEEKS OF PURCHASE, BUT THEY MUST BE UNMARKED AND ACCOMPANIED BY A RECEIPT.
o THE CELLAR HAS A HUGE SELECTION OF SUPPLIES ALSO AT DISCOUNT PRICES-NOTEBOOKS,
PENS, CALCULATORS, NON-PRESCRIPTION DRUGS AND PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS, CARDS,
POSTERS, SPORTSWEAR, BACKPACKS, ART AND ENGINEERING NEEDS AS WELL AS AN EXTENSIVE
LINE OF REFERENCE BOOKS AND STUDY AIDS ON THE GROUND FLOOR. SOME OF THESE WILL BE
AVAILABLE WITH YOUR BOOKS IN THE BALLROOM BUT CHECK OUT THE DOWNSTAIRS STORE
ALSO. WE CAN SPECIAL ORDER MANY ITEMS NOT USUALLY CARRIED, AND WELCOME YOUR
SUGGESTIONS FOR NEW ITEMS YOU'D LIKE TO SEE IN THE STORE.
O YOU CAN SELL YOUR BOOKS BACK AT THE END OF THE TERM (OR WHENEVER YOU NO LONGER
NEED THEM) AT THE CELLAR'S BUYBACK WINDOW ON THE GROUND FLOOR. PRICES PAID ARE
CONTINGENT ON FUTURE USE OF THE TITLE ON CAMPUS.
You can't do better than to shop at the UNIVERSITY CELLAR--you're getting good prices on quality merchandise,
and your patronage-will help insure that the ten-year effort to keep the Cellar alive and a vital force in the Ann Arbor
and University communities-will continue. During the next few years the Cellar will be building and expanding into its
new location in the Michigan Union-we'll need lots of support and help from you to continue to make the Cellar a
bookstore responsive to your needs, and serving your interests.
