SPORTS 1 :7 The Michigan Daily Sunday, November 22, 1981 Page 8 - 'W Spartans shut out By MARTHA CRALL Special to the Daily EAST, LANSING- A 21-year-old kid from Guelph, Ontario capped what tur- ned out to be a dismal day for Michigan fans. Michigan State goalie Ron Scott tur- ned in a spectacular performance and earned the fourth shutout of his short career as a Spartan with a 3-0 white- washing of the Wolverines at Munn Ice Arena. THE CROWD of 6,555 remained unappreciative of Scott's feat until MSU killed off a one minute, 20-second five-on-three Michigan power play, af- Action Sports ear FACTORY4CLOSEUTS Swimwea r Footwear Bodywear 406 East Liberty 2 blocks off State Street 663-6771 ter which the fans gave Scott a rousing ovation. Gary Haight, Ken Leiter, and Lyle Phair netted the Spartans scores. The sophomore netminder has already done four times what former Michigan All-American Paul Fricker never did once-hold the opposition scoreless. THE WOLVERINES put on the ice a rather make-shift team, skating without the services of defensemen Mike Neff, who was suspended after a fight on Friday night, and an injured Brian Lundberg. The most serious blow, however, was the loss of leading scorer Ted Speers, who suffered a knee Great Scott FIRST PERIOD Scoring: 1. MSU-Flaight (Scott) 1:38; 2. MSU-Leiter (Anastos, McPhail) 15:19. That pressed freshman John Hawkins into seryice at the blue line and Graig Noren as a forward. Defen- seman Steve Richmond was double shifted all night long as nearly everyone saw action on the impotent power play, which was 0-8 last night and 0-14 in the home and home series. AFTER MICHIGAN State took a 2-0 lead in the first period, Phair capped the Spartans scoring with a goal at 15:18 of the third stanza.. Michigan goalie Jon Elliott stopped Icers, 271Spartan shots, but was obviously over-shadowed by Scott, who saved 30 shots. Michigan State's initial goal came on a power play while the Wolverines' *Dave Richter was serving his first penalty of the evening. The goal occured at only 35 seconds of the first period. AFTER BILLY Reid had cleared the puck, Scott gave it to defenseman Haight, who skated clear'down the right side and beat Blue defenseman Mark Perry at the right circle. The puck went clean through Elliott's legs to make 3-0 ti 1-0 at 1:38. Later in the period, the Spartans made it a two goal lead when both teams were skating down a man. Leiter notched his first goal of the season with a slapshot in the middle just inside the Michigan zone. The shot hit a screened Elliott straight on and went between his legs again at 15:19. Although neither team was par- ticularly crisp, MSU got controlled play in the neutral zone, subsequently spen- ding the majority of the first period on the attack. . Sugar and Orange Bowl representatives were present, and bids were to be offered Saturday afternoon. Marino hooked up with flanker Barry Compton for two quick touchdowns and halfback Bryan Thomas cut back for 19 yards and a third score to give Pitt a 21- 0 first quarter lead. Ptstons cool By JESSE BARKIN Special to the Daily *PONTIAC- Isiah Thomas' game-leading 28 points lifted the Detroit Pistons to a 95-86 victory over Utah last night at the Silverdome. The win catapulted Detroit to first place in the NBA Central Division, one-half game ahead of Milwaukee. Thomas also dished off eight assists despite missing eight of his sixteen free throw attempts. The Pistons shot only 46% from the field, while the Jazz could only manage 44%. "IT WAS NOT a thing of beauty," said Pistons Coach Scot- ty Robertson. "But there is no such thing as a bad win." The defensive combination of Kelly Tripuka and Greg Kelser put the clamps on the NBA's leading scorer, Adrian Dantley, who scored 24 points, eight of which came after the game had already been decided. Jazz, 95-86 "I thought we did an especially good job in the second half in holding the number of shots Dantley took," said Rober- tson. AFTER TRAILING most of the game, the Jazz closed the gap to 80-77 on a Dantley jump shot midway through the four- th quarter. But the Pistons reeled off eight straight points to put the game out of reach. Piston general manager Jack McCloskey announced, after the game, the trading of Keiser to the Seattle Supersonics for guard Vinne Johnson, pending the passing of physical exams for both players. "It was a good trade for both teams," said Robertson. "Greg wasn't getting a lot of minutes (played) for us and Vinnie wasn't getting a lot of minutes with Seattle." Kelser's reaction was very positive. "That (the trade) will be real good for me, because they want me." The Ride ... THE Ride more thanjust a bus. Liberty- 4th 5th Stcite___ '. Wiliam \11, J .
