4 SPORTS The Michigan Daily Sunday, November 15, 1981 Page8 4 Icers come. By MARK BOROWSKI The real Michigan hockey team finially woke up last night to play the final period in its game against Western Michigan, managing to salvage a 4-3 squeaker. , The game started like a bad dream for the Wolverines, as they failed to take advantage of several scoring op- portunities and let Western Michigan take a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when junior center Diego Odino swatted in a bouncing rebound off the pads of godlie Peter Mason that landed in the net. THE GOAL came less than a minute after the Wolverines did a fine job of killing off a two-man Bronco advantage while defensemen Steve Richmond and Mick Neff were in the penalty box. Mason, however, remained sharp while the rest of the team dozed. "Mason played well," said Michigan coach John Giordano. "We played pret- ty well overall; I'm happy with both games." The victory upped Mason's record to 2-0-1 on the season as Giordano con- tinues to alternate the starting net- minder position between the New York native and freshman Jon Elliott. THE PLAY that finally brought Michigan and a rambunctious crowd of 4,921 at Yost Arena to life was a third period goal by Steve Yoxheimer to give TUESDAY LUNCH-DISCUSSION NOVEMBER 17, 12 NOON "ISLAM, CHRISTIANITY, AND MARXISM AND THEIR IMPACT ON NIGERIA IN THE 80s" Speaker: DR. Yoxheimer was on the fly when a Don Krussman pass landed on his stick. Yoxheimer then snapped a quick shot past WMU goalie Glenn Healy that rung the back post and bounced back out before the referees could see it. The goal judge flicked the red light on momentarily and then turned it off as played continued until Michigan froze the puck. The Wolverines protested the call and the officials conferred before the goal judge signalled a Blue goal, for what turned out to be a sure victory. Sophomore winger Jim McCauley added what turned out to be the winning goal at 19:17 of the final period when he blocked a Bronco shot, raced the length of the ice and slid the puck into an em- pty net as Western pulled Healy in or- der to have six attackers. TWENTY-THREE seconds later the Broncos tried to put themselves back into the game with another goal from Odinoto make the score 4-3 butait was too late to make a serious comeback. As the slow-moving first period was coming to an end, Western's Glenn Johannesen speared Michigan's Brad Tippett and was issued a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct. The lackluster Wolverine power play was unable to take advantage of the one-man advantage until a Tippett tip- in knotted the score at 1-1 with only 48 seconds left in the penalty to Johan- nesen. Ann Arbor native Mark Perry let his slapshot fly from the point and Tip- pett just angled it between the legs of Healy. Michigan took the lead for the first time in the game at 15:11 of the second period, when Dennis May's third goal of the season gave the Wolverines a 2-1 edge. May flew down the right wing and whistled alow shot that caught the far corner just after the Wolverines' Jeff Grade returned from a two-minute penalty for checking the goalie. THE BRONCOS retaliated at 5:01 of the third period, when Rob Reid received a Paul' Reifenberger pass, glided past a stumbling Perry and flip- ped a perfect wrist shot over Mason's left shoulder to tie the score at 2-2. The win upped Michigan's record to 5-1-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the CCHA, while Western fell to 3-4-1 in the league, t buck Broncos, 4-3 At the International Center 603 E. WALTER CLARK Dept. of English 761-9579 Bruno: Ex-M crplays for new pro team I . Thcyire crc By MARTHA CRALL and CHUCK JAFFE Former Michigan hockey player Bruno Baseotto is now playing for his , fourth team since he left Michigan early last season. Baseotto's newest team is the Flint Generals of the International Hockey League. The Generals acquired his services from New Brunswick of the American Hockey League. Both clubs are affiliated with the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League, with whom Baseotto is under contract. "I WASN'T getting any playing time at New Brunswick, and I was getting ready to quit hockey and pack it in," Baseotto said. "But then I was told that if I do well here, they'll call me up (to the Black Hawks)." Baseotto has been with the Generals for three weeks, but has yet to see any action due to a knee injury. He expects to be ready to play this weekend. "The Chicago Black Hawks are very high on him and they sent him here to get some playing time," said General's manager Mark Boileau. "We expect him to be here as long as he produces, and if. he produces enough, I'm sure the Black Hawks will bring him up." After leaving Michigan' last season, the right winger went to the Calgary Wranglers of the Western Hockey League, where he led the team in scoring with 55 goals and 59 assists for 114 points. After the season, the Black Hawks signed him as a free agent, and after training camp, assigned him to New Brunswick. "The coach there (New Brunswick coach Orval Tessier) wasn't going to play me," Baseotto said. "It's a whole lot of politics. I'm just glad I got out of it and came down here to play." and The Fast and Furious Grand National All-Star Delivery Squad...
