Dietz, Harte star *in intrasquad game By JAMES LOMBARD Freshman Peggy Harte overshadowed her teammate and older sister K.D., by scoring 27 points to lead the Blue over the White 92-67, in the annual Michigan women's intrasquad basketball game last night at Crisler Arena. After a fairly close first half which ended with the Blue on top 42-41, both Hartes, Terri Soullier, and June Hardy started connecting on all ranges of jump shots to outscore the White 50-26 in the second half to break open the game. THE BLUE combined this with a tenacious defense and a pesky full court press to give the White offense problems throughout the second half. Hardy of the Blue canned 24, along with senior All-American Diane Dietz of the White team. Soullier, who picked up-most of her 19 points in the second half, and {ardy, who was dominant under the boards, led the hustling Blue defense that led to many fast breaks and easy Blue buckets. ._--.The weeki The Michigan Daily-Friday, November 13, 1981-Page 11 DAILY I'lne . Stager 1 By JAMES THOMPSON e Gus Stager returns tonight as the new head coach of the Michigan men's swimming squad as the tankers take on ,Toronto at Matt Mann Pool at 7:30 p.m. Stager, who has had success with the feam in the past, has taken over as an interim coach after former coach Bill Farley's resignation. COMING OFF of a 7-3 season and a fourth place finish in the Big Ten, the Wolverines look strong according to Stager. "I feel terrific about our swimmers," said Stager. "The swim- *ners' performance thus far indicates their desire to swim theit best." The ,tankers are led by seniors Feranando Canales, a °freestyler, who was red-shirted last year and Kevin "Irish" Williamson, who has cut his. last year's time considerably in the 1000 freestyle. Stager also feels the team has many other leaders to help the team. Others who he refers to are Bruce emmell, a backstroker, Walter 'Trip" Gage and Tom Ernsting, both freestylers, and Tom Dudley and Scott Crowder, both flyers. "They're (the swimmers) doing a great job," said Stager. "They're a good group of workers." ONE PERSON he feels should do very well is sophomore Mark Noetzel. Noetzel is a freestyler who has also cut his last year's time in the 50 freestyle. Newcomers that will contribute to the team's success are Carl Bocerra, who looks really good according to Stager. "We also have to expect a lot out of Kip Kimball," replied Stager., One thing he's concerned about though is their main concern when they swim. "They're more . concerned about beating each other thus far than with getting better times, which creates a problem for the coach, then," he said. eads tanker start In relation td 'opening seasons in the past, Stager indicated that there have been differences between now and then. Before, they started off the season too' slowly, but right now things are moving nicely. "I'm very satisfied about their performances in practice and I'm anxious to see the results of the meet," said Stager. ALTHOUGH THE.team will only be facing Toronto, there is expected to be many close races. "The competition is going to be there," explained Stager, "but I think we're a better team." The diving is where the real com- petitiveness will show through. Toronto has a diver the caliber of the best 12 in the NCAA. For Michigan, Ron Merriott and Jon Beach will be the top con- tributors. Last season, the Wolverines were able to defeat Toronto, but with the changeover in coaching jobs, some might expect something different. Since Stager has had the chance to coach some of the swimmers in the past, he feels they're more pleasant to work with. "It's a unique situation I'm in," he said. "I can't lose. If we win, I'll be given credit, but ifwe lose, the fault doesn't lay with me. Between now and two years ago, times have changed and the whole student body has changed ... they're a more serious group of young people out here and after this meet, I'll be able to tell more of their ability," said Stager. a , t 44 CLEM% gift gob Canales ... top Wolverine tanker BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY EXCLUSIVE FRANCHISE AVAILABLE The Incredible KARNS Loudspeaker is coming to U. of M.
