8 SPORTS I The Michigan Daily Friday, November 13, 1981 Page 9 Troubled Michigan defense ready to face powerful Bronco offense By KENT WALLEY ft definitely has the makings of a fine ries. Michigan has allowed only 11 -goals in its first six games while Western Michigan has scored 23 goals in its first six games. This weekend, the Broncos host the Wolverines tonight and play their first away game at Yost Ice Arena tomorrow. Michigan's strength is its defense. Senior goaltender Peter Mason has only ~en scored upon once in seventy ,inutes of league playing time (.971 save percentage), while freshman netminder Jon Elliott has allowed six goals for .a .936 save percentage. These two Wolverine goalies rank among the top three in the conference. WESTERN Michigan's strong suit is a balanced and potent offense. Its top line of senior left wing Fitzpatrick, senior center Bob Scurfield and junior ring wing Bob Bailey account for eight of the Bronco goals and 16 assists, but last weekend against .Notre Dame, GRIDDE PICKS' If you'd like a chance to win a free pizza from Pizza Bob's and to compete against' the Daily football "experts," get your Gridde picks in to the Daily at 420 Maynard by midnight toimorrow. .MICHIGAN at Purdue (pick score) 2. Among them was freshman center Jim Grillo, who scored two goals in the Friday night game. Western will try a new line this week, according to coach Glen Weller. Junior center Diego Odino will play with senior wings Terry Olson and Jim Olson. The two Olsons each have six points, while Odino has five. . Not all of Western's bright spots are on offense. Rookie netminder Glen Healy played both games last week and has notched 118 saves for a .894 percen- tage. Healy shares duties with junior Steve Abbott (60 saves, .870 percen- tage). AS USUAL the key to the game will be the Michigan defense. Weller said that the Michigan defense gives few scoring opportunities and indicated, "We must capitalize on the oppor- tunities we do get." Wolverine mentor John Giordano said that his team is ready. The major difficulty, he foresees is that "defen- seman Dave Richter won't play tonight because he will be out of town, possibly weakening the Wdlverine defense. To adjust for the missing Richter, Michigan may move Paul Brandrup to defense. Giordano also hopes for stron g performances from defensemen Mike Neff, and John Hawkins. After losing to Lake Superior 4-3 and tying 1-1 last weekend,.Giordano does not look back on it as a rough series. "We learned our lesson thinking Lake Superior wasn't going to bertough. It was a good learning experience. I'm looking fcr the team to bounce back this weekend. It's not going to be an easy series, but we're going to Western, ready to play."_ Weller is not as confident with his team. "We have pretty good balance right now, but we're still at a point where I feel we've got some work to do yet. We're not sophisticated enough to change (strategies) for specific teams," said the coach. WELLER ALSO indicated that his team is still in the recovery stage from several injuries. Standout center Scur- field is still recovering from a badly torn thumb. Although he only missed the first series, his hand stillisn't 100 percent, according- to Weller. Also defenseman Lance Johnston, is still playing with a weak left elbow. Thus far all of Western's games have been at home. But playing in Ann Ar- bor Saturday night doesn't have Weller worried - he said, "I'm looking for- ward to it." OPEN MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, AND SATURDAY, 9:30 A.M. UNTIL 5:30 P.M.
