The Michigan Daily-Friday, November 6, 1981-,Page 11 LAKERS TO CHALLENGE UNDEFEATED BLUE M icers set for weekend series By MARTHA CRALL Special to the Daily SAULT STE. MARIE- When a winless team meets an un- defeated one, the rendezvous often ends with neither team retaining its-original distinction. That theory will be put to the test this weekend as the A ichigan Wolverine icers (2-0 in the CCHA) meet Lake Superior State College (0-4 in the league) in a two-game series here. "YOU'VE GOT TO look at that record," said Wolverine head coach John Giordano. "They lost twice to (first-place) Michigan State, once in overtime." Giordano does not expect the Lakers, winner of two non- conference games against Western Ontario, to be a pushover. "They're an offensive threat," he said. "It'won't be as easy as their record would indicate." The Lakers have proven that they can score goals, as their top six scorers have accumulated 40 points in six games. THE WOLVERINES are ranked third in the country in the WMPL (coaches') poll and are hot off of a two-game, non- conference sweep of Toronto last weekend in Ann Arbor. "We're in pretty good shape physically," said Giordano af- ter the two-game tussle with a rugged Toronto squad. "We're, drained mentally. Hopefully, we can bounce back." Michigan will once again rely on its veteran defense to neutralize Lake Superior State's biggest offensive threats, right wing Steve Mulholland (three goals-five assists-eight points) and center Mickey Chandler (2-5-7). EITHER FRESHMAN Jon Elliott (3-0) or senior Peter Mason (1-0) will start in goal for Michigan. First-year Laker coach Bill Selman has also used two goalies, sophomore Lawrence Dyck and senior Pat Ansell. Michigan's major scoring weapon thus far has been Ted Speers (7-0-7). Brad Tippett (2-3-5) acts as its sparkplug. Tonight's game begins at 8 p.m., while action will start ,tomorrow at 7:30 in the James Norris Center. pRT HOUSEWARES "" " &SPORT CENTER WE RENT TOOLS WE FIX WIDGETS 221 E. Post 20.'DAILY LIBELS at JUCO State l Pistons keep rolling, By MARK FISCHER Special to the Daily PONTIAC- The Detroit Pistons outscored New Jersey, 22-9, at the start of the third quar- ter and held on for the rest of the game to defeat the Nets, 109-103, before 5,116 fans at the Silver- dome last night. It was the Pistons' third win of the season against no losses. Detro t took an 81-74 into the final stanza, but the Nets chipped away at it behind Buck Williams' 12 fourth-period points to pull within two, 101-99, on a Mike Woodson layup with two minutes left in the game. A minute-and-a- half and an exchange of baskets later, Williams missed an offen- sive tap attempt and came crashing down on teammate Len Elmore, leaving the Pistons with a five-on-three fastbreak. John Long took advantage of it with a short jumper to put Detroit up by four with 24 seconds left. RON LEE and Kelly Tripucka iced the game for the home team with four foul shots to finish the Pistons' scoring. Long led a balanced Piston scoring attack with 23 points, followed by the 15-point perfor- mances of Terry Tyler, who played inspired defense (six blocked shots) all game,, and Isiah Thomas who fouled out with 1:16 remaining. Piston coach Scotty Robertson praised Tyler for his efforts. "Terry made some great plays and had some great blocks."
