WHAT EVERYONE forgets is that Lantry is fourth on Michigan's all-time scoring list with 176 points, and the leading kicker, with 21 field goals and 113 extra points. Also forgotten is his last-second, game-winning field goal against Purdue, in 1972 that gave Michigan a share of the conference title that year. "I guess it's nice to be remembered, but it gets a little trying sometimes," Lantry said. "But that's indicative of anything in sport. Some things that go wrong will always stand out. "Not too many people mention the field goal in the Purdue game," he con- tinued, "I don't think too many people remember Ohio State's Tom Klaban either, and he kicked four field goals to beat usin'74." MIKE LANTRY KICKS one of his school-record 21 field goals. Lantry, best remembered for three field goal misses, is also fourth on Michigan's scoring list. Helpu~s olu. eV sure o u aeo thee correct rat. : failures ENDURING BOTH success and failure, Lantry was by no means an or- dinary football player. After graduating from high school, the Ox- ford, Mich. native enlisted in the Army. After spending a year in Viet Nam, he was assigned to work at the Pentagon. "I took my SATs and boards when I worked at the Pentagon," Lantry said, "and I applied to a lot of schools. When I found out that I was accepted at Michigan, I jumped at the chance to go there." Lantry entered Michigan as a 23 year-old freshman, intent on playing football and joining the track team. "I DIDN'T HAVE the advantage of being a highly-recruited high school athlete," Lantry said. "I'd get out of a couple of football practices to go to track meets because I was a scorer for the team. Track allowed me to work out through the winter, so I was in good shape for spring football." Despite being older than most of his teammates, Lantry said that he was not looked upon as the team's "old man." "I didn't feel out of place because of my age," Lantry said. "Every now and then I'd get references to George Blan- da, but nobody really focused on it." WHAT THEY DID focus on was his kicking ability. "He had one of the strongest kicking legs I've ever seen," said Jerry Hanlon, the Wolverines' of- fensive line and kicking coach. "He always had the ability to kick the lon4 field goal." This ability earned Lantry the nickname "Super Toe." "I NEVER heard anyone call me that until my father taped a radio broadcast and I heard (Bob) Ufer say it," Lantry remembered. "I guess it stuck, and some of the newspapers used it." Today, "Super Toe" is removed from football. After graduating fron Michigan, he spent a year with the Dallas Cowboys, sharing the kicking chores with Toni Fritsch. But the two- kicker system didn't work out, so Lan- try left football. "I had a lot of good success at Michigan, and I got a taste of the pros," he said. "But I decided that to get out and get more stability in my life." LANTRY IS A family man now, however, with a special interest -in Michigan football. And his name still gets recognized on occasion. "I'd like to be thought of as a gooS sales engineer rather than someone who comes in and throws football jargon around," Lantry said. "I've never used football as a wedge, although people will usually ask me about those field goals." "He was a team player and a good in- dividual," Hanlon said. "He understood that, as a kicker, you're either a hero or a goat, and there's no in betwee4 That's a position he accepted." Only 135 yards stopped Mike Lantry from being a forgettable hero, but with all his kicking records, and later ac- complishments, he probably shouldn't be forgotten. GRIDDE PICKS The space shuttle Columbia was sup- posed to take off on its second missiori yesterday morning, but today it's st4 on the ground. What happened? Didn the space suits come back from the dry cleaners in time? Or was it that NASA forgot to install windshield wipers in case of foul weather? Well believe it or not, it was neither of these. Our trusty astronauts forgot to turn in their Gridde picks this week and are busily getting them ready to turn in before midnight tomorrow. If you want to compete with th spacemen, be sure to turn in your Grid- de picks to the Daily at 420 Maynard for your chance to win a one-item pizza from Pizza Bob's and the opportunity to compete with the "experts" from the Daily football staff. 1.
