'.r By BOB WOJNOWSKI The Michigan women's volleyball team staved off three match points to defeat Wayne State, 15-7, 11-15, 9-15, 15- 7, 15-14, in a pulsating come-from- behind home finale at the CCRB last night. When the see-saw match was over, the large, enthusiastic crowd rose and gave both teams a standing ovation. All Michigan coach Sandy Vong could do was sigh and say "well, you saw it all. What more is there to say." EMPLOYING AN attack which stressed fundamentals acid shied away from mistakes and the spectacular, Wayne State was able to stay in every game, but unable to effectively pull away. That inability to put the Wolverines away was to be the Tartars' downfall in the decisive fifth and final game. Wayne State, relying on the serving of sophomore Lisa Bonza, roared to a quick 6-1 lead in the deciding game. Michigan 'clawed back and stayed close but could not grab the lead. With the score 14-9 in favor of the Tar- tars, the Wolverines suddently caught fire. Urged on by a vociferious crowd, the Big Ten champions broke service, scored a pair of points, broke service again, scored another point, and broke service a third time before scoring the final two points off the service of senior Alison Noble to wrap up the match. Vong credited the Tartars, but admit- ted that his squad is still basking somewhat in the glow of last week's Big Ten championship victory. "Wayne State is a very good team," said Vong: "We need to do a lot of work. They (the Wolverines) still haven't touched ground yet." MICHIGAN HEAD coach Candy Zientek said she is very hopeful about her team's chance in the tournament. "They use a draw to determine who plays whom and we just got very lucky," she explained. "We start the tournament off playing Western Illinois who shouldn't be as tough of -com- petition as some of the others. I think we have a shot. We're a far stronger team then last year." The Wolverines, who boast an overall season record of 11-7-1, lost in the AIAW state championship last weekend to the CMU Chippewas, 1-0.
