SPORTS The Michigan Daily Tuesday, November 3, 1981 Page 9 'M' spirits, Illini offense fly high By GREG DeGULIS They were down, and it looked like they would stay down for the count. But the Michigan gridders have been granted a reprieve in the last couple of weeks, and Michigan coach Bo Schembechler relishes his revived Rose Bowl hopes. "Our intensity is back," Bo noted at the weekly Michigan football luncheon yesterday. "We've been in races before and if you give a Michigan team a second chance .. .," Bo trailed off. Last weekend's convincing 34-13 Wolverine win at Minnesota, coupled with the Illini defeat of Iowa, leaves Michigan as a solid Rose Bowl contender. Two weeks ago; the odds that Michigan would be in Pasadena on New Year's were, said Bo, "zero to Snone," but two conference losses by Wisconsin and Iowa vaulted the Wolverines into a tie for second place with a 4-2 Big Ten record along with Illinois and Wisconsin. "WE'RE JACKED and we're going after this thing," said Bo, whose sentiments were echoed by one of his veteran players, senior defensive back Brian Carpenter. "The attitude is real good," Carpenter said. "We feel we can win it." Asked whether the team preferred another bowl if Michigan stumbles in coming weeks, Carpenter immediately replied, "It's Rose Bowl. We'll only settle for the best." The story line goes as follows: If Wisconsin loses or ties, and Michigan wins the last three games, the Wolverines will take their third trek to Pasadena in four years. IT SOUNDS simple, but the three best passing teams in the Big Ten- Illinois, Purdue, and Ohio State- loom ahead on Michigan's schedule. Illinois, the Wolverine opponent next Saturday, is certainly not shy about putting the ball up. Illini quarterback Tony Eason has thrown for over 300 yards in five games as 80 percent of his team's yardage has come through the air. Hardly "three yards and a cloud of dust." 'We're jacked and we're going after this thing.. -Bo Schembechler on the Big Ten title "No team in the league has the sophisticated passing patterns of Illinois," Bo said. "Before, you had to stop the rushing game of 300 yards, but now you have to stop a passing game of 300 yards." Contrary to popular belief, Illinois does run the ball occasionally, almost too occasionally for Illini head coach Mike White. "I wish we could run the ball bet- ter," White admitted as he addressed the luncheon by phone from Champaign. "People think I'm kidding, but you can't beat a great team with no running game." DESPITE WHITE'S wish, Illinois uses its running backs more for little dump passes out of the backfield than for running. "To them," said Bo, "throwing the ball to the tailback or fullback is the same as a run- ning play." Junior Illini running back Darrell Smith has already amassed 26 catches for 299 yards, while his backfield mate, senior Joe Curtis, has 22 catches for 142 yards. The two wide receivers boast of Anthony Carter-like numbers of 30 catches and 586 yards for an 19.5 average for junior split end Mike Martin. His counterpart, junior wide receiver Oliver Williams, has equally impressive numbers-28 receptions, 541 yards and a 19.3 average. Typically, Bo has kind words for the transfor- mation of the Illinois team from 1980 to 1981. "A lot of new players," Bo said. "They have faster receivers and their defense is a lot better." Hence the 4-2 Big Ten record. "We've had some sellouts down here," White con- tinued. "That's sort of unique and it has helped." Last year, White said, "I could barely get my players out of the lockerroom (at Michigan)." This year, though, a mobile junior college transfer named Tony Eason and a better defense make Illinois more than ready to face up to the task.
