It seems even more significant when it portrays the number of freshmen on the 1981-82 hockey team. If the team wasn't so top heavy with seniors, head coach John Giordano would have a lot to worry about. Thir- teen of the team's 28 members are newcomers, but added to eight seniors, the numbers aren't so menacing. THE RATHER menacing part is for the frdshmen, who face a high attrition rate even after "final" cuts have already been made. "What this means for the 13 fresh- men," said Giordano, "Is that some of those guys are not going to make it. "So I'm waiting for the guys who are going to develop, to develop, and the other guys are going to fall by the wayside." AND, NO doubt some will fall by the wayside considering the rigorous stan- dards they have to meet to satisfy Gior- dano. "What I've learned up here, it's been so much more," said freshman defen- seman, Mike Neff. "The conditioning has been so much more, so much har- der and that was kind of a turn-off at first. "But," said the former member of the Paddock Pool Saints of the Detroit Junior 'A' league, "It's coming to the point where it's not as hard, at least I'm getting used to it. With my old league you'd practice two times a week atthe most, so skating every day is a big dif- ference." WITH FOUR senior defensemen leaving at the end of this season, a lot of blueliners will get a look and Giordano is very high on the 6-0, 185 lb. Neff. "Mike's going to be alright because he's a great body checker. He's a foot- ball player and all that physical strength shows up on the ice," said Giordano, whose major criticism of newcomers is their lack of strength. Giordano is also molding John Hawkins to be a starter on defense. The Buffalo native, like Neff, is just trying to get used to the system. "HERE WE concentrate a lot more on defense," said Hawkins, who last played for the Junior Saabres. "It's hard for me to switch over because last year I played on the power play and was more offensive-minded." Giordano has no qualms about Hawkins' offense, but the familiar complaint of "no defense" has been ex- pressed. "John's a very good puck han- dler, but he has to learn to play the body. Right now he's not strong defen- sively," said Giordano. And at 6-2, 195, great things are expected of Hawkins. Also receiving rare rave reviews from Giordano were centers Paul Kobylarz also played at Mihigan. He may play as a defenseman or a forward. "I don't know what he's going to do," Giordano said. "But I like his attitude. He works hard and he's trying to learn as much as he can and I think that's good." The 6-1, 175-pounder is also adjusting to the Michigan game. "This team uses a lot more set systems than they did back in Calgary," he said. "In Calgary it was a lot dirtier of a game. Probably the hardest thing to get accustomed to is that it's a lot quicker down here and more of a clean, hard-hitting game." James Huber, a highly-touted recruit from Calgary, is rather small (5-7, 175) and is at this point, "quite a ways away," according to Giordano. "He's strong. He can shoot the puck, he seems to be a natural scorer and he's learning our system," said Giordano. HUBER HAD to go through an at- titude change and said Michigan was really different than back home. "The biggest adjustment for me is the prac- tice, the attitude and coming to the rink every day," he said. "It's really more intense here. I've never practiced so much. "I'm just looking forward to getting in the lineup," Huber said, finally. "I'm patiently waiting." Other newcomers include Craig Noren, a 5-10, 160-pound center from Milford. But he's got the same problem that many of the freshmen face-he's not strong enough. - "HE CAN'T stay up with the play because he's not strong," said Gior- Friday, October 30 LAKE SUPERIOR AT FERRIS STATE MICHIGAN STATE AT BOWLING GREEN MICHIGAN TECH AT WESTERN MICHIGAN NORTHERN MICHIGAN AT NOTRE DAME Chicago Circle atMiami Toronto at Michigan Windsor at Ohio State Saturday, October 31 BOWLING GREEN AT MICHIGAN STATE LAKE SUPERIOR AT FERRIS STATE MICHIGAN TECH AT WESTERN MICHIGAN NORTHERN MICHIGAN AT NOTRE DAME Chicago Circle at-Miami Toronto at Michigan Windsor at Ohio State Friday, November 6 BOWLING GREEN AT MICHIGAN TECH MICHIGAN AT LAKE SUPERIOR MICHIGAN STATE AT FERRIS STATE NORTHERN MICHIGAN'AT OHIO STATE NOTRE DAME AT WESTERN MICHIGAN @Miami vs Providence @International Cup, Montreal Saturday, November 7 BOWLING GREEN AT MICHIGAN TECH FERRIS STATE AT MICHIGAN STATE MICHIGAN AT LAKE SUPERIOR NORTHERN MICHIGAN AT OHIO STATE NOTRE DAME AT WESTERN MICHIGAN @Miami v. "JEFF'S TOUGH, he can play the body, he's physical, he's a good puck handler, he's got good breakaway speed," said Giordano, covering all bases. "He's got to learn to be a little more disciplined." The 5-10, 160-pounder played on the Great Lakes team which won the gold medal in the National Sports Festival last summer, and he can play all the forward positions. KOBYLARZ, AT 6-0, 187, comes to the Wolverines from Detroit Catholic Central High School, where he was an All-Stater. Like all the other freshmen, he has a lot of adjusting to do. "Here they have a lot of systems to get accustomed to," he said. "And the pace is a lot quicker in the game. Those are the two major things I had to adjust to. But I'm more comfortable now than when I first came." Giordano thinks Kobylarz will start right away. "He's got good speed, he's tough, he can score goals, he doesn't back down from anybody and he's smart," Giordano said. "He's a little rough around the edges playing the systems, but he's going to be a player." THE OTHER seven non-goalie" freshmen have a longer way to go, ac- cording to Giordano. But, a pleasant surprise among the walk-ons is right winger Dave McIntyre. Giordano com- pares him to former walk-on defen- seman John Blum, who last year signed a professional contract with the Ed- monton Oilers of the National Hockey League. "Dave's tough, he's a leader, he's big and strong and smart," said Giordano. "lie's got poor skating skills and poor shooting shills, but he works hard to overcome that. He'll probably be suc- cessful because he has a great at- titude." Doug May, the younger brother of forward Dennis May, earned a spot as a walk-on, but Giordano says "school's out" on the younger May, whose father (Amateur and Commercial Photofinishir McIntyre ... surprise walk-on greetings 1. r"a dano. "But he's got a great mind. He doesn't look out of place when he's playing with two good players like (Brad) Tippett and (Ted) Speers because he can play with those guys, he just can't keep up with them. Another recruit who is having problems getting used to the. physical game is Bob Zucchetto, a 5-11, 190 pound center from Toronto. Ann Arbor's contribution to this year's hockey team is another walk-on, 6-0, 185-pound Rick Lacombe. However, the left winger must improve his skating skills before he can make the travel squad, according to Giordano. So Giordano has 11 non-goalie fresh- men, quite enough to build a solid nucleus for the future, in lieu of significant numbers of sophomores and juniors. But the attrition rate is generally high. "If all 13 come through, that's fine," he said. "But I expect that maybe eight or nine will stick. If so we're in pretty good shape."
