Sponsored by: The Ecumenical Campus Center, First Presbyterian Church, and Office of Ethics and Religion, U. of M. seven uays ago, wnen mcnigan coach $o Schembechler addressed the media at his weekly press luncheon, Rose Bowl aspirations were the last thing on his mind. The Wolverines had lost a 9-7 squeaker to Iowa, and for the first time in Schembechler's 13 years as the Michigan field general, a Wolverine squad had a "zero to none" chance of going to Pasadena. YESTERDAY, however, the light of optimism returned to Schembechler's eyes. Sure, Michigan defeated North- western in a cakewalk, 38-0, but more importantly, the Hawkeyes were field- goaled to death by Minnesota 12-10, and Illinois handed Wisconsin its secondv consecutive conference setback, 23-21. The Wolverines' Rose Bowl hopes, considered dead after the loss to Iowa, have been resurrected following the Northwestern win. "It's the wildest race I've ever seen," said Schembechler, confidently puffing on a cigar. "There are seven teams which have a legitimate shot at the championship. The only teams that are out of it are Northwestern, Michigan State, and Indiana. The title is up for Seven teams still have shot at title next week," said Schembechler. "We aren't thinking of red-shirting him for the rest of the season. We want him back. I'm hoping that he'll be ready the following week. After a week or two, Thompson could be ready to play..I'm not sure about Needham, and Haji- Sheikh won't even by ready to practice until later this week." grabs. It's there for the taking." "UP FOR GRABS" is an understate- ment. Five teams, including Michigan, are tied for third place with 3-2 con- ference records. Iowa and Ohio State are tied for the top spot with 3-1 marks. Such tight standingsare bound to build fan interest in the conference for the remaining four weeks. "There's enthusiasm in Minneapolis, Columbus, Champaign, and Madison, right now," Schembechler added. "It's going to be tough for us. We have quite a chore on our hands. We might very well be playing the four best teams in the league right now over the next mon- th. That presents quite a challenge." Making that challenge even greater for Schembechler is the fact that he'll begin his drive for the conference championship with an almost totally rebuilt defense. "OUR SECONDARY has got to come forward and give us some leadership because we are awfully young up front," said Schembechler. "They (the defensive secondary) are finally healthy. (Defensive back Brian) Car- penter survived the Northwestern game with his bad ankle, so we were lucky there\" The secondary may be healthy, but there are other key injuries to the defense which are worrying Schem- bechler. Linebackers Robert Thom- pson, Ben Needham, defensive lineman Winfred Carraway, and placekicker Ali Haji-Sheikh head the wounded list. Carraway injured his ankle in prac- tice a few weeks ago and hasn't played since. Defensive captain Thompson tore a tendon in his hand last week, for- cing him to miss the Wildcat game. Needham and Haji-Sheikh missed the game due to an injured knee and a hamstring pull, respectively. "Carraway isn't going to be back 0 0 Schembechler 'title up for grabs' SIMULAION STATION HAPPY HOUR SPECIAL Michian Grid Statistics 500 E.
