All of the elements, that is, ex- cept the spark which can only be provided by broadcaster Bob Ufer. As fans braved sub-freezing tem- peratures and the October snowfall, and awaited Schembechler's ap- pearance the band treated them to a rousing musical prelude although the general feeling was that a chorus of "Jingle Bells" would have been more appropriate. BECAUSE OF surgery he underwent yesterday, the health of Ufer was listed in serious condition late last night, was on the minds of many of the Wolverine faithful at the rally. A tape of Ufer was played over the intercom system, raising cheers from the crowd. But for most, it served only as a hollowed sub- stitute for the real thing. When Schembechler took the stage, he began by asking the crowd to include Ufer in their prayers. "It is in times like this when a team needs a man like Bob Ufer," the coach said. Then Bosettled into the issue of the upcoming game versus Northwestern. "We have not quit," he pledged. "We will play hard tomorrow, next week, and the following weeks." His sentiments were echoed by defensive co-captain and linebacker Robert Thompson. "In the next .five weeks, you will see a new Michigan football team play." The crowd cheered jubilantly, and then broke into an im- promptu version of "Hail to the Vic- tors". From the crowd attitude, one would never have known that the Wolverines were coming off of a conference loss that had seriously dismantled their Rose Bowl hopes. Hundreds of avid Blue fans braved sub-freezing temperatures to hear the trio comment on today's contest against the winless Northwestern Wildcats. The Wolverines are heavily favored to hand the 'Cats their 27th straight loss. 6 0 9wo II edipse IN A VERY SPECIAL 14 BENEFI T PERFORMANCE TONIGHT' n q KN UI I A & A 41. AI
