Vong's pleasure stems from the fact his women's volleyball team is having its finest season in it eight year history, sporting a solid 23-7 record. PART OF THE success the Wolverines have achieved this season can be attributed to four team mem- bers nicknamed "The Canadian Con- nection." The foursome, all Ontario citizens, feature senior hitter Julie Stotesbury of Stayner, Susan Rogers a sophomore center-blocker from Oakville, and freshman center-blocker Diane Rat- nick from Agin Court. The fourth member, of this quartet is sophomore setter Alison Noble. Noble as a fresh- man last year, was the only member of the team to be named to an All-State berth. Noble also chalks up outstanding honors as the '79280 Canadian Athlete of the Year in her senior year of high school. Yesterday Noble was invited to try out for the Canadian Junior National Team. Throughout high school, Noble played with her Scarborough Titans, a highly- ranked squad based near her hometown in Toronto's northern suburbs. The Titans won a national championship in 1980 with _the help of Noble, Rogers and Ratnick. "VOLLEYBALL is more popular and more developed in Canada than in the United States," said Noble "If you're dedicated to the sport you join clubs and not high school teams.'', Coach Vong agreed, There's tough competition up there. They start them into a tough program at an early age." But this wasn't the case for Noble. Volleyball was just an extra curricular activity in middle school, until her in- terest grew to a serious dedication in the ninth grade. NOBLE REMAINED a hitter in her high school years, but was coached to set during her last year with the Titans. "I didn't really start setting until I came to Michigan," said Noble. Prior to choosing Michigan for her collegiate and athletic future, Noble pondered such Ivy League possibilities 6 6 6 Daily Photo by KIM HILL SOPHOMORE STANDOUT ALISON Noble skies high in the air to put the finishing touches on a Michigan point in the Spikers 15-12, 15-12, 15-7 victory over Windsor. Noble, who was named-to the All-State team as a freshman, has been one of the main contributors to the Spikers early 'success this season. In addition, the team has been aided by the performances of three other women from Ontario, making "The Canadian Connection" a force to be reckoned with in the Big Ten this year. 0 662-8672 209 S. Academically its a great school," said Noble who presently majors in computer engineering' Coach Vong credits his 5'9", 135 lb. setter with her ability to boost the team's morale. "She really.picks everybody up in a down situatin," said the coach. "She's a tireless worker. I've never seen her give less than 100%" Another one of Noble's assets is her height. Being 5'9" is helpful in playing a sport like volleyball which uses a seven-four-four inch net. Noble claims that all types of height can be useful on a team; being short is definitely not a hinderance. Noble remains one of the tallest Michigan players. This weekend Noble and her team- mates will travel to Illinois to compete in the Big Ten Tournament to deter- mine who is the number one team in the conference. And if the Michigan spikers continue their success, Sondy Vong will still carry that consistent grin on his face. r ATTENTION Juniors, Seniors, Grad Students BUILD YOUR CREDIT through VISA Guaranteed "Bank Action" Ap- and/or plications are available to 1,000 Univ. of Mich. students through,CSA on a first come, first served basis only!
