G The Michigan Daily-Friday, October 23, 1981-Page 15 NU frosh Villars hopes to lead Cats past Blue By DREW SHARP If Rodney Dangerfield should ever look for new material, his search would end with Northwestern football. It, like the comic, gets no respect. It is easy to understand why. The Wildcats are two straight losses away from matching the all-time college football record for futility - 28 consecutive setbacks. What is not so easy to understand is why any incoming freshman would nt to play in such a macabre U°ation . "MOST SCHOOLS wanted me to play other positions, but I wanted to play quarterback," added the 6-3, 180-pound St. Louis native. "Coach Green said that he wanted me as a quarterback so that's why I'm here." With the season at the midway point, there does not seem to be any regrets. Villars is the leading passer for the Wildcats, completing 47 of 86 passes for 501 yards, and also the leading rusher, gaining 208 yards in 44 attempts. "I feel that my running and passing ability helped my chances," said Wolverine squad which is still smarting from the Iowa upset of last week. "I HAVEN'T even thought about how they will feel going into the game," said Villars. "I feel that they are just another team and we shouldn't look at. them any differently. No matter who it is we are playing, I've got to make sure that we execute on offense. If we don't execute, we'll lose anyway no matter who we're playing" The Wolverines will be facing a pro set offense in Northwestern and Villars would not have it any other way. struggle he relishes. "It's really great to be part of the revitalization of the program here," said Villars. "The players are getting more and more confidence in Coach Green's ability. They feel that he can turn this program around and they are behind him all the way. We just have to keep getting more good freshmen in here and we'll be alright." Green seems to have already started making his mark on the team with the steady use of freshmen, like Villars, in the line-up. "He wants to start using his young players as soon as possible to get them used to playing," said Villars. "We are definitely thinking of the future with our players." Villars cedrtainly hopes it is a bright future. f/ ............................... :. . . . . . . . . . . ...............,:...:............... "I feel kinda good that .I have the chance to play right now," said the freshman Villars, who will'be starting his third straight game for North- western this season against 18th ranked Michigan tomorrow. "I honestly believe that I can do something to help the team this year. Coach (Diennis) een put Jne in a few weeks ago '.cause (Mike) Kerrigan wasn't moving the offense. He felt it was time for a change so he let me start at QB." Playing quarterback was the reason Villars decided to attend Northwestern. Villars. "Kerrigan is a very good passing quarterback, but when your of- fensive line breaks down like ours has this season, you need a quarterback back there who can run out of trouble. That's why Coach Green put me in the starting line-up.'' GREEN HAS all the confidence ,.in the world in his freshman signal caller. "Kevin is an extremely active quar- terback," said the rookie coach. "And that's what I want in my quarterback. He can turn an eight yard loss in to a three, four or 10 yard gain." Villars will definitely have his work cut out for him tomorrow against a "I love Coach Green's offensive philosophy," noted Villars. "We go with the 'I' and 'split back' offenses and that allows us to be wide open offen- sively. I try to use all of my receivers, running backs, and split ends."
