NEW YORK (AP)- Bob Watson, one f those Yankees' "Old Folks," uscled a three-run homer in the first inning that carried New York to a 5-3 victory last night over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first game of the 1981 World Series. The 35-year-old Watson and some of his veteran teammates had come under fire by Yankees owner George Stein- brenner during New York's American East Division play-off series ith Milwaukee. But Watson, who had 11 hits in the division and championship series, an- swered Steinbrenner's complaints again with a home run in his first World Series at-bat. THE VICTORY went to Ron Guidry, 11-5 with a 2.76 earned run average during the season. He checked Los Angeles on four hits and six strikeouts through seven innings before retiring in favor of relievers Ron Davis and then Goose Gossage. The Dodgers scored their last two runs in the eighth inning, but the Yankees were saved from further damage in that frame when third baseman Graig Nettles made a spec- tacular leaping catch of a drive by Steve Garvey. The Yankees struck for three runs in the first inning on the home run by Wat- son. WITH ONE out, Mumphrey singled to right and after Winfield struck out, Piniella hit a ground rule double into the right field corner. Watson then drilled a 1-2 pitch over the right-center field fence, becoming the 17th player in history to hit a home run in his first World Series at bat. New York knocked out Reuss in the third when Mumphrey drilled his second hit of the game, stole second and scored on Piniella's single to left, making it 4-0. Bobby Castillo relieved Reuss at that point. Piniella stole second and Watson walked before Castillo got Nettles to fly out to right. Guidry, meanwhile, mowed down the Dodgers, allowing only Steve Garvey's leadoff single in the second over the fir- st three innings. The Yankee left- hander struck out four consecutive bat- ters over one stretch, retiring Guerrero, Monday, Yeager and Reuss, all on swinging third strikes. ner Gov. Carey bets his apples ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Hugh Carey says he is so convinced that the New York Yankees will chew up the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series that he's willing to wager New York apples against California oranges. "I'll wager Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley that we take them in not more than five games," a Yankee-boosting Carey told reporters yesterday. "And $5 to the winner." "He can pay me in oranges. I'll pay him in apples," said the governor. "No fruit flies in our apples." Carey also said it would be nice for Los Angeles to win one because "Tom- my Lasorda's a nice guy." "Having done what they've done to Oakland I feel sorry for Los Angeles," said Carey. "We can beat anybody in California." Wednesdays & Thursdays 8:00 pm to Closing BEER PRICE! PIZZA 25% OFF! ON WED.
