Finance Economics Marketing Accounting General Management Health Administration Public and Non-Profit Human Resources Management Science Policy B LAME. IT'S IN vogue right now to point, angry fingers, blaming someone or something for Michigan's early conference losses. "Slim and no" Rose Bowl chances in mid-October are foreign to Wolverine fans, so the reaction to the Iowa defeat has been quite harsh. Interest in the rest of the football season seems to be declining and ticket-scalping entrepreneurs shud- der at the thought of $10 Ohio State tickets. Michigan is 2-2 in the Big Ten, and well, who is to blame? If you would stop people on South University and ask who or what is to blame for the losses, a myriad of responses would result. There are the, Steve Smith critics, Bo Schembechler critics, of- fensive line critics, defensive line critics, secon- dary critics, officials critics, etc., etc., etc. There is just no simple reason to explain the losses-no consensus at all. . First and foremost are the quarterback critics. Whenever the offense sputters, the fans zero in on the quarterback, dissecting every statistic to prove their point. Against Iowa, Smith's passing statistics confirm the theories of the quarterback critics-six of 20 for 108 yards, one interception and one touchdown. Not good enough to win, right? Not according to Bo Schembechler, who has and will continue to wholeheartedly support Smith at quarterback. "If I had to rely just on him (Smith) to win the Iowa game, he would have done it," Schembechler said at yesterday's weekly media luncheon. "He threw seven balls that we didn't catch. We had four dropped, two called back by of- ficials and the interference call. That's 13 of 20; not bad." So, maybe it's not the quarterback. "I'm not blaming him (Smith) or me," Bo con- tinued. "What about the coaching staff-are they letting up this year?" a reporter asked. "No, they're fine," Bo retorted. So, maybe it's not the coaching. The massive offensive line received much of the blame after the Iowa loss, so critics gobbled up the angry Bo quotes after the game. "Our blocking was horrible. I lay our bad performance entirely on the lack of blocking," Bo explained. So, it's the offensive line, right? Maybe not. This is the same group that has opened up massive holes for Butch Woolfolk, who has amassed 860 yards in 1981. You cannot blame the line entirely, like Bo said. Even the men in the black and white stripes, received pointed fingers of blame in their faces. It's no secret that Bo disagreed with a few calls, and in fact; Michigan is going to test the Big Ten official review process as a result of the Iowa game. "If we had played against only the Iowa defense and not the other guys (officials) . ." Bo trailed off. But you can't blame the officials entirely, can you, Bo? "Nah," replied the coaching legend. So, even the officials duck the blame. The blame, indeed, may lie with something that doesn't sh'ow up in statistics or game films. Those intangibles, so familiar to Jimmy the Greek's bet- ting board, are not in favor of Michigan in 1981. In- tangibles, such as intensity and field leadership, so apparent in 1980, seem to be lacking this year. "This team has a lot of excellent character-type people," Bo said. "They work hard and practice hard, but for some reason they just don't demon- . pointing everywhere strate the hunger needed on Saturday afternoons. "I've never been associated with a Michigan team that has given up on a championship as easy as this one has," Boa continued. "If you get beat because another team is better, then so be it. But when a team leaves you with questions due to a lack of intensity, it is very frustrating." Frustrating, indeed, for 'the players, coaches and the fans, especially after being given such a glorified pre-season ranking. A large part of game intensity stems from the senior leadership. In 1980, two senior leaders occupied the two signal calling positions-quarterback and inside linebacker. Sophomore SteveSmith replaced senior John Wangler and junior Paul Girgash replaced senior Andy Cannavino at the leadership positions-another intangible not in Michigan's favor. "This (1981) is a good group," Bo said. "But they have to do less of a workmanlike job on Saturday. They must play with more intensity." There's that word again. "It's senior time," Bo said. "They can close out as a fighting class or one that didn't do it. They know that. That's the key." That senior key can open the door to an '81 disaster or possibly-open the door to a major bowl bid. !"If we win the next five games, we'll be somewhere," Bo replied to a bowl question. "There won't be many 9-2 teams." Bo, though, remains a bit leery. "I'm not sure we're not playing the top end of the conference now," Bo said. "We may still be in° the race. I honestly don't know what to expect." Well, expect a 9-2 season to change fingers of blame to fists of joy.
