with the addition of a melodic piano and
synthesizer. Also, Mas' passionate,
pleading vocals are much stronger than
Martin's. "I Waited All Night," an
honest, compelling rocker, is
ameliorated by the subdued
desperation conveyed through Mas'
voice, and augmented by the emphasis
on the percussion section. Side one ends
with the album's weakest songs: "Lit-
tle Baby of Mine," a ballad, and "Dirty
Lying," featuring the petulant, nasal
vocals of Mas.
Side two offers as much to relish as
the preceding side. Especially notable
is "Love Like a Stone" with its neo-
Motown sound and lyrics to match
("I've got a love like a stone/such a
sweet foundation").

There are a few other styles present
on side two, as well. "What Is It About
You Baby" is a beautiful ballad with a
country and western feel. "Under One
Banner" is reminiscent of the folk-rock
anthems of the late '60s, with Mas'
vocals sounding similar to those of Joan
Baez as she sings, "Now is time/to lay
down your cloak and your dagger/Don't
you see that we are under one banner."
The talent and energy of Carolyne
Mas compare favorably with that of
any of the current reigning rock 'n' roll
queens, and it is unfortunate that she
hasn't received any noticeable amount
of public acclaim. Modern Dreams
should finally garner Mas the
recognition she deserves.

Sil-lum Hunger Kung-Fu
When odhidhorma, on Indian warrior
priest, entered the Chinese Shaolin Temple,
he found the monks in an emaciated state
and unable to stay awake during medita-
tion. The Indian master introduced a series
of exercises to condition their minds and
bodies. These exercises are said to have
been the forerunners of the Shoolin fighting
system of Kung-fu.
The Asian Martian Arts Studio also offers
programs in: Shorin-ryu Karate-do, Aikido,
Children's Class.

Carolyne Mas-'Modern
Dreams' (Mercury)

Carolyne Mas has released her
third album to the anticipation of vir-
tually nobody. Too bad, because as her
voice and songwriting ability mature,
Mas is establishing herself as one of the
premier female rock 'n' roll artists in
America. t
Her latest release is enhanced by the
addition of an experimental synthesizer
and producers Jon Astley and Phil
Chapman, both of whom have worked
with artists such as the Who, Eric Clap-
ton and David Bowie.
Side one begins with the hard driven,
intense "It's Important," which sets
the tone for the whole album. Mas
follows with a cover of Moon Martin's
"Signal for Help." She has given this
song a softer edge than Martin gave it,

B LONDIE'S kingpins, Debbie Harry
and Chris Stein, have moved intp
experimenting with pop-funk in a major
way on this collaboration with Nile
Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, the
main men behind Chic. Given thle
pioneering work both these bands have
done in that sub-genre, it would seem
that they could have made the
definitive pop-funk album. Instead,
they made Koo-koo.
Don't get me wrong-it's a fine
album. Far more listenable than Blon-
die's last LP, Auto-American. The sad
fact remains, though, that this is hardly
good pop or good funk. The beat is dan-
ceable but sort of desexed-adequate
but rarely really funky or soulful. Pop
is represented exclusively by inane
lyrics and Harry's coldly studied
vocals. Somebody should have told"
them that this was supposed to be. a
collaboration, not a compromise.
Still, a nice record to listen to and oc-
casionally worth dancing to, but absent
of all the magic you might have expec-
ted from this meeting of the minds.

retains its early meaning of "night
music." It is alternately passionate and
calm, transparent and stormy. Soloists
will be baritone Leslie Guinn and cellist
Aurora Natola-Ginastera, with the Con-
temporary Directions Ensemble.
The final work of the concert is the
Concerto No.1 for Piano and Orchestra,
Op.28, performed by Anthony di
Bonaventura and the University Sym-
phony Orchestra. A virile and colorful
piece, it was commissioned in 1961 by
the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foun-
dation in the Library of Congress. An-
thony di Bonaventura, a child prodigy
who gave his first professional concert

at age four, has had many compositions
written especially for him, including
works by Berio and Persichetti.
A professor at the School for the Arts
of Boston University and Founder-
Director of the Piano Institute at Colby
College, Maine, di Bonaventura pe
formed the concerto last year to grea
critical acclaim.
Ginastera himself has been present
for the production of his works and has
been a volatile force in their rehearsal.
Now a balding, rather retiring figure
who speaks English haltingly, he does
not match the passions delivered in his
music. But as Bartok said, "I cannot
conceive of music that expresses a
solutely nothing." The music of AlbertF
Ginastera cannot be faulted for lacking
