EAST LANSING (AP) - After five games in the friendly confines of Camp Randall Stadium, 14th ranked Wiscon- sin finally hit the road - and the road hit back. The Badgers were ambushed 33-14 Saturday by lowly Michigan State at Spartan.Stadium, losing their first Big Ten game this season and a share of the conference lead. BUT PLAYING away was not nearly as big a factor in the game as Bryan Clark, said Wisconsin Coach Dave Mc- Clain. Clark, Michigan State's senior quar- terback, threw for three touchdowns, setting up one with a 41 yard run, as the Spartans won their first conference game in four tries. "Clark had a fine game," McClain said. "There weren't many phases of our game that were good, I guess I'm at a loss for words. "I REALLY don't know why we played so poorly. We definitely didn't put any pressure on the pressure at all." Clark hit Daryl Turner for two scores in the first half and connected with Otis Grant for a TD in the third quarter. Aaron Roberts added an insurance touchdown on a 1 yard run as the Spar- tans improved their season record to 2.4 Wisconsin dropped to 42 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten. Clark completed 18 of 31 passes for 291 yards and ran for 52 yards to amass the third best day on offense by an in- dividual in Spartan history. "The last few weeks this team has really come together but we have to work really hard and improve," Spar- tan Coach Muddy Waters said, clut- ching the game ball. "I think we will. "I almost forgot what this feels like," he added. Ohio State 34, Illinois 27 COLUMBUS (AP)-Ohio State survived another big passing performance by. The Buckeyes, now 2-1 in the league and 4-2 overall, thwarted Eason's fine passing performance with three inter- ceptions, the last by outside linebacker Anthony Griggs. WITH 2.05 left, Griggs' interception stopped the Illini's bid for a last-ditch touchdown at the Ohio State 33-yard line. Illinois, dropping to 2-2 in the con- ference and 3-3 for all games, overtur- ned an early 21-10 Ohio State lead and went on top 27-24 early in the third quar- ter on a 4-yard run by Eason. The Illinois quarterback, however, was more impressive through the air, hitting 27 of 47 passes for 368 yards. He has passed for more than 300 yards in all of his Big Ten starts this season.' Purdue 35, Northwestern 0 EVANSTON (AP) - Scott Campbell hurled three touchdown passes an- Jimmy Smith ran for two scores yesterday to lead Purdue to a 35-0 Big Ten victory over Northwestern, exten- ding the Wildcats' losing streak to 26 games. Campbell -fired touchdown passes of 22 yards to Joe Linville, 11 yards to Everett Pickens and 18 yards to Steve Bryant, while Smith pounded across from the 1-yard line twice for his two touchdowns. Purdue turned two pass interceptions and a fumble recovery into first-half touchdowns as the Boilermakers lifted their record to 2-2 in theBig Ten and 4-2 overall. Northwestern suffered its six- th loss this season and now is two losses short of matching the all-time major college losing streak of 28 games shared by Kansas State and Virginia. Northwestern has not won a football game since a 27-22 victory over Wyoming in the second game of the 1979 season. Indiana 17, Minnesota 16 BLOOMINGTON (AP) - Mike Green- y 737 N. Huron YpslIontl stein's 23-yard field goal snapped a 14- 14 tie with 6.33 to go yesterday, then Indiana's defense stopped Minnesota at the Hoosiers one-yard line in the closing seconds to preserve a 17-16 Big Ten Conference football victory. Greenstein's field goal gave Indiana a 17-14 lead, but Minnesota's final two points came on a safety with five seconds remaining, when Hoosier quar- terback Babe Laufenberg fumbled the ball and fullback John Mineo recovered it in the end zone. Indiana had taken over when a four- th-down bid for victory by Minnesota failed after the Gophers elected to pass up attempting a field goal that would have tied the game. The Gophers scored on another safety in the second quarter, and kicker Jim Gallery booted four field goals, in- cluding a 48-yarder that had tied the game at 14-14 midway through the third period.
