My landlord has not returned my security deposit, nor have I heard from him since I moved out at the end of August. How can I get my deposit back? A. If you notified your landlord in writing of your forwarding address within four days after the date you moved out, your landlord has waived all claims for damages against your security deposit by not sending you a list of damages claimed within 30 days of your move-out date. Since more than 45 days have elapsed since your move- out date, you may sue your landlord for twice the amount of your deposit. * * * * - Q. My landlord returned part of my security deposit within 30 days of my move-out date, but he deducted money for damages, and I disagree with him. How can I get the balance of my deposit back? A: You should send the landlord your written objections within seven days of receiving his notice of deductions. Then, he can only keep the disputed Student Legal Services money if he sues you within 45 days of your move-out date, and obtains a judgment for the money. If he doesn't sue you, you can sue him for twice the amount disputed. * * * * Q. My landlord has sued me because I objected to her charges against my security deposit for cleaning and legal costs. What should I do? A. Your landlord can't deduct legal costs from your security deposit. She cannot charge you for cleaning expen- ses related to normal wear and tear on the apartment. If the lawsuit was filed in small claims court, you can proceed without an attorney. If you have any questions concerning how to defend yourself in court, you should contact an attorney. * * * * Q. May a landlord charge a non- refundable cleaning fee in addition to collecting one-and-one-half months rent as security deposit? A: Non-refundable cleaning fees are legal and do not affect the amount your landlord may collect as a security deposit if the very same cleaning will be paid for by the next tenant's non- refundable cleaning fee. 4 5 6 Fed up with these crazy puzzles? THE MOST "visible and dramatic" progress of women has been in athletics, the council report said. Although women lag behind in athletic scholarships and still share uniforms in some schools, "women athletes are no longer a rarity," the report said. It said gains for women's programs have not hurt men's programs, which still get two-thirds of. the school athletic budget increases. Among the report's statistics: * In 1974, the average men's athletic budget was 22 times the women's budget; in 1979 it was five times larger. * Five hundred schools now offer scholarship aid to women athletes, compared with 60 seven years ago. * By 1980, females were 30 percent of all participants in intercpllegiates athletics, compared with 15 percent before Title IX. . Women now get 22 percent of all athletic scholarships at schools belonging to the two major athletic associations, compared with one per- cent in 1974. 7 8 9 © 1981' United Feature Syndicate, Inc. By calling ahead, you can be sure the restaurant is open ... the store has what you want ... or the friend you want to visit is home - before you waste time, gas and money on an unnecessary trip. On the average, you waste about a dollar's worth of gas on every unnecessary trip- and just two wasted trips than $100 worth of gas a year. Saving energy is easier than you think, and with the rising energy costs we're facing today, it's never been more important. So the next time you pick up your car keys and head for the door, ask yourself whether a phone call could save you the trip-and the wasted gas.
