The weekly DAILY ne-

.. . .

There was no joy on the trek back from East Lan-
sing last Saturday night for the Daily sports staff's
mero uno, Mark "Michigan by 40" Mihanovic. Not
ly was he depressed that the Wolverines only beat
the Spartans by a mere 18 points, but he also tied
fellow Libel rogue Drew Sharp for the worst record of
the week at 5-5.
"It's a good thing that I'm a rational person and I
don't let things like this get to me," said Mihanovic as
he feverishly tried-to pick off hitchhikers on I-96.
GREG DEGULIS and Buddy Moorehouse tied for
top honors with identical 8-2 records with DeGulis

taking the overall top spot.
"This is enough to drive a man to drink," said the
stone-livered Sharp, who fell to the cellar in the
overall editor standings.
Dejected over the weekend's poor showing,
Mihanovic and Sharp were determined to chomp
every morsel of food at Bo Schembechler's weekly
press luncheon-and they nearly did it.
"EVERY TIME I think of DeGulis and Moorehouse
winning I feel like I'm about to lose my lunch," said
Sharp, while working on another loaf of bread.
"Shut up and pass the butter!" raged Mihanovic

while snatching the loaf from Sharp's grasp.
Will the bloated Mihanovic and Sharp be able to
save face? Will DeGulis snare the top spot again?
Will Moorehouse hang from outside of the Daily if he
has another good week? Or will two-time Gridde win-
ner Steve Hirtle have "another good flip of my
speciality coin" and take it?
"It doesn't matter to me," said DeGulis. "I'll be
celebrating anyway."
"I just won't wear any neckties for the next week,"
stated the fearful Moorehouse.
We shall see.

Yankees lead A's in ninth

BILLBOARD
The U-M Alumni Association will hold
their fifth annual "Go Blue" Brunch
prior to the Michigan-Northwestern
game, from 10-12:15 in the Track and
Tennis Building on Ferry Field. Alumni
and their families, students, parents
and friends are welcome. The deadline
for reservations is Monday.

OAKLAND (AP)- Willie Randolph's
o-out solo homer in the sixth inning
ve the New York Yankees a 1-0 lead
over the Oakland A's in the ninth inning
last night. A Yankee victory will
eliminate the A's from the American
League Championship Series.
Left-hander Dave Righetti of New
York and right-hander Matt Keough of
Oakland struggled- through .five
scoreless innings.
RIGHETTI escaped damage in the
Sst inning with a double play, and af-
er giving up consecutive one-out single
to Kelvin Moore and Dave McKay in the
second, Righetti struck out Jeff
Newman and induced Rob Picciolo to
hit into an inning-ending forceout.
The A's threatened again in the third
when Rickey Henderson led off with a
walk and, one out later, stole second,
his second theft of the game. Righetti,
however, got Cliff Johnson to pop out
and struck out Tony Armas.
The Yankees loaded the bases with
o out in the first on a single by Larry
ilbourne and a pair of walks. Keough
escaped when Armas snared a line
drive by Graig Nettles near the right
field line.
GRIDDE PICKS
the Chicago Bears are being sued by
of their fans for not playing like a
professional rfootball team. Actually,
the reason behind the fan's retaliation
is not that the Bears are below .500 in
the pro standings but because they
finished below .500 in last week's Grid-
de .
If you would like the opportunity to
compete head to head with the Bears,
drop off your selections at the Daily Of-
fices, at 420 Maynard, before midnight
Friday. A one-item pizza from Pizza
'ob's and a chance to compete against
eDaily "experts" awaits the winner.
