Page 14-Friday, October 16, 1981-The Michigan Daily Wings down Blues,6-3 By LARRY FREED and LARRY MISHKIN Special to the Daily DETROIT- Detroit Red Wing coach Wayne Maxner complained last season about a lack of aggressiveness from his club. But after last night it was St. Louis Blues coach Red Berenson who was shaking his head after he witnessed the Red Wings outhustle his Blues for an easy 6-3 victory, which marked the Wings first home opening victory in seven seasons. "We were disappointed as we had hoped to come in here and play better," said Berenson. "Detroit played well, they worked hard, outhustled us, and checked us tight throughout the entire game. They deserved to win." THE SPARSE crowd barely got set- tied in their sets when Red Wing center Mark Kirton lit the red light only 25 ' seconds into the contest. After the Blues' Joe Micheletti evened the score on a power play goal early in the first period, Kirton perfor- med his magic once again as he beat Blues' goaltender Mike Liut only 11 seconds into the second period. However, the Red Wings let their fans settle into their seats in the third period so they could witness Detroit scoring three unanswered goals to put the con- test out of reach. 1M John Ogrodnock, on a feed from linemate Dale McCourt provided the game winner early in the third period. Earvin "Magic" Johnson, the for- mer Michigan State star led his Los Angeles Lakers to an exciting 111-108 NBA exhibition victory over the Detroit Pistons last night. Johnson led the Lakers with 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 13 assists. LOS ANGELES LED the entire fourth quarter, but with 2:03 remaining, Detroit's John Long hit a jumper from the corner to bring his team to within one point, 107-106. Laker center Kareem Abdul-Jabber countered with a patented sky hook. Then Johnson grabbed a missed Piston shot from off the board, took a couple of dribbles, then fired a long bounce pass to Jam- ia al Wilkes for an uncontested layup which gave the Lakers a 111-106 lead with 1:34 left. Long, who topped all scorers with 29 points, closed the gap i to- 111-108 with a leaning lane jumper. When, with 14 seconds left, Los Angeles' Mitch Kup- chak was called for an offensive foul and the Pistons had the ball and a chan- ce to tie with a three-point shot. Long's attempt was short, however and so was Greg Kelser's last-second attempt from behind the three-point stripe. "It was just a thrill for me," said Johnson of his first basketball game in East Lansing since leading the Spar- tans to the NCAA championship in 1979. "'I've been waiting for this game a long time, ever since it was put on the schedule." The Pistons' heralded rookies, Isiah Thomas and Kelly Tripucka, scored 13 and 10 points respectively. Thomas ad; ded six assists to the Piston effort. A sellout crowd of 10,004 jammed into Jenison Field House on the Michigan. State campus to see Magic Johnson and the Lakers play the. Detroit Pistons in an exhibition game. JOHNSON PUT on his usual exciting show in the first half leading all scorers with 12 points and leading all players it rebounds and assists with seven and six respectively. The Pistons jumped out to an early lead and led at the end of the first quar- ter, 28-22. Detroit extended its lead to 12 points midway through the second quarter, playing well, but playing against the Lakers's substitutes. . But ' when Johnson and Jabber re-entererA the game midway through the quarte' . the Lakers began to come back. Johnson ignited an 11-4 spurt near the end of the half with back to back three- point plays, on weaving drives through the lane resulting in layups. The Lakers tied the game as the half ended 58-58. The Pistons outshot the Lakers 53%to1 44% but the Lakers held an 18 to 9 edge in rebounding to keep them in the game. S You've been trying to get to know her better since the beginning of the term.
