"I never -seven and a quarter inches is expected to go into coaching," Canhams ray up, but that was Don said, "but the war came along. Afteri s best high jump effort in a serving from '41 until '46, I came back track uniform, and he's been for grad school and was an assistantr gher in the Athletic Depar- track coach. Two years later I was head r since. coach." n ascended the ladder from As head coach of the track team, ican athlete to coach, and then Canham compiled an impressive jump to the post of Athletic record. In 19 years of coaching, his at Michigan, where he has teams won 12 Big Ten titles, making the last 13 years. The job has him Michigan's winningest track coach es of its own, but Canham has ever. een ready for a challenge. But Canham had one more position to kM WAS also a hurdler and fill in the Michigan Athletic Depar- ter for the Wolverines, and af- tment, and in 1968, he was appointed Athletic Director. "I GUESS they couldn't find anyone else," Canham said. "I'd been fairly1 successful as a coach, and I had a business background, so they thought I was qualified." Canham has proven to be more than qualified, as he has added the facilities and raised the money that has made the Michigan Athletic Department one of the strongest in the nation. But despite1 the pressures of running the program,I Canham enjoys his work. "It's kind of like running a big toy store," he said. "I couldn't be doing it if it wasn't fun." CANHAM'S FUN has resulted in a number of changes in Michigan athletics. These changes have included the conversion of Yost Fieldhouse to Yost Ice Arena, the Track and Tennis Building, the football complex, and renovation of the football stadium. "He's always been concerned with money," said assistant athletic director Will Perry. "But there has always been an end. He's had so many plans, and they've almost all come to fruition, that he has had to raise the money. "He's been able to look down the road and see what was happening," Perry added. "When other people were asking 'Are we going to keep gymnastics or cut out baseball for a women's sport?' he was making sure that we would be self- sustaining, and would keep all those sports." DESPITE ALL of Canham's achievements, though, one stands out as the best of his career. "Hiring (football coach Bo) Schem- bechler was without a doubt the best thing I've ever done," Canham said. "I have 100,000 critics every Saturday, and if they have a legitimate com- plaint-about seating or ticket- takers-then I'll try to fix it. If they want me to fire Bo because we lost to Wisconsin, then I'll just tear up the let- ter." The thirteen years at the helm of Michigan athletics haven't changed Canham much. "He's stopped smoking now, and he's more relaxed," said Perry. "There are a lot of major things that he wanted to do, and he never had a chance to relax. He's a little more easy going now." But time has not changed Canham's commitment to Michigan. He is still working to improve Michigan athletics, and his is recognized as one of the nation's finest athletic directors. According to Will Perry, that com- parison doesn't go far enough. "When it comes to Athletic Directors," Perry said, "Don Canham is in another world." "Technology is the biggest difference between then and now," he said. "The coaches told us not to lift weights or we would get muscle-bound. We could have jumped inches higher if we had today's knowledge."
