in danger of ignoring the combai
readiness of the existing confentiopal
military systems. Carroll said the U.Sj
needs to airlift men to support existing
forces around the world and to build up
the reserve forces that have dwindled
to low levels.
Carroll also said the recent:surge iri
military spending is dangerous becaus4
it is draining resources that migh$
otherwise be allocated toward social
programs.
"There is a real possibility that wheri
people see the consequences (of
Reagan's defense spending) we'ro
going to see a real backlash" of publiq
opinion, Carroll said.
