f A The Michigan aDaily's^- SPORTS Thursday, October 8, 1981 Page 8 0 Arbeznik now hits in radio booth By JIM DWORMAN Despite being a two-time All-Big Ten selection at guard and co-captain of the football team in his senior year, John Arbeznik was an unknown on some cor- ners of the Michigan campus. "I'd go into the store to cash a check ,and no one had ever heard of me," said Arbeznik, who lettered in football from 1977 through 1979. THE LACK of recognition in Ann Ar- bor remains with the Cleveland, Ohio native who now serves as an analyst on Toledo radio station WTOD's (1560 AM) broadcasts of Michigan football. Teamed with play-by-play man Jim Wood, Arbeznik must perform in the IT'S APPLE CIDER TIME AT HURON FARMS CIDER MILL The Natural Place for Cider and Donuts shadow of Bob Ufer, whose broadcasts are carried on powerful station WJR in Detroit. While Ufer's enthusiasm makes him a favorite among the Blue radio audience, Arbeznik and Wood deliver a smoother, less emotional football coverage. "He's just a natural," said Wood of Arbeznik. "He's very easy to converse with and very insightful." What is unusual about this is that prior to last year's Purdue game, Arbeznik had never been in front of a microphone. ARBEZNIK DOWNPLAYS his lack of experience: "I think broadcasters are born. You can take com- munications classes and learn about the business, but I don't think any cour- se could have taught me how to act on the air. "If Steve Grote (former Michigan basketball player and NBC color com- mentator) can make it, anyone can," joked Arbeznik. According to Wood, who has been doing play-by-play for Michigan foot- ball since 1965, Arbeznik's biggest asset as an analyst is his rapport with the coaches and his understanding of the game. Arbeznik acknowledges his foot- ball connections and hopes to use them to his advantage. "I want to get a weekly thing with Bo going," he ex- plained. ARBEZNIK'S THREE years of playing for Schembechler have also proven valuable. He often predicts what plays the coach will call. "I can almost guess what the plays will be," said the 6-3, 243 pounder. "It scares me because if I know what's going to happen you wonder what the other team's defensive coordinator knows." Arbeznik estimates his ac- curacy at 80 percent. While Arbeznik is certainly no Ufer, he is not afraid of showing his emotions on the air. "I almost got thrown out of on weekends. His primary employment is with Proctor and Gamble in Akron, Ohio, where he is in the management training program. Before entering into the business world, however, Arbeznik tried-out with both the New Orleans Saints and the New York Jets of the National Football League. He was cut by both teams because his skills as a pass blocker weren't up to NFL standards. "I wasn't your great, outstanding talent," said Arbeznik. "But if I had made it my goal, I could have played in the league." WHAT IT all boiled down to was motivation. , "I didn't go to practice fired-up, ready to play," reflected Arbeznik. "B told us this at Michigan, and it's true; all you're playing for in the NFL is money. Some of them (former team- mates)-Doug Marsh and Curtis Greer-make quite a bit of money. They have incentive. If there isn't money, it isn't worth it." The money wasn't there for a free- agent offensive lineman named Arbez- nik. a APPLES HALLOWEEN PUMPKINS And a Good Time in The Country Only ten minutes from campus Follow the map or Call 426-3919 for Information Huron River Ur. "I'll always want to keep in touch with my past," he said. "Broadcasting keeps me close to the team." BILLBOARD Today at 4:30 p.m. is the deadline to sign up for intramural touch football.
