IRA guerrillas end hunger strike (Continued from Page 1) LONDON (AP) - Prince Charles has granted himself a $4,816-a-week raise to offset the costs of married life. The 32-year-old crown prince, who exchanged vows July 29 with Lady Diana Spencer, will now earn the equivalent of $751,350 a year - all tax- free - a 50 percent increase of $250,450. THE ANNOUNCEMENT late Friday came as the government curbs pay in- creases in state-owned corporations to four percent for some four million civil servants. Raises so far this year are averaging less than 10 percent, slightly below Britain's rate of inflation. Asked if the prince was aware of the government's curbs, John Haslam, assistant press secretary of Queen Elizabeth II, said: "We are not Statistic depart-ment enrollment triples (Continued from Page 1) popularity to Prof. Ed Rothman, who introduced the course in the early 1970s. "I'd attribute it almost entirely to Professor Rothman," Woodroofe said. "He conceived the course and totally designed it. He also deserves credit for being an excellent teacher." But Rothman deflected the credit, saying the course has become popular through word-of-mouth advertising and because other departments have drop- ped their statistics courses. Even though Woodroofe said he sees enrollment in his department leveling off and perhaps declining slightly, Woodroofe said he is optimistic about the future. "We hope to continue to of- fer a strong enough program so that other departments will send us their students for their basic training," he said. unaware of the other factor in the coun- try at large." The Sun, a conservative tabloid, said the timing of the announcement had embarrassed the queen. ALTHOUGH THE announcement made the front pages of almost all Lon- don newspapers, there was no editorial comment. But opposition Labor Party legislator and longtime royalty-baiter Willie Hamilton immediately attacked the prince and demanded the nationalization of the Duchy of Cor- nwall from which Charles gets his in- come. Since 1969, when Charles inherited the Duchy of Cornwall on his 21st birth- day, the queen's eldest son has by right received the income from farmland, fisheries and other money earners in the duchy - presently about $1 million a year. Thatcher, attending a meeting of Commonwealth prime ministers in Sydney, Australia, was awakened at 1 a.m. to be told the protest was over. "THE PRIME minister is delighted that the hunger strike has ended," her office here said in a statement. "She has been deeply distressed at the loss of young lives inside sand 'outside the prison." The protest was begun March 1 by Irish Republican Army guerrilla Bobby Sands to try to force the British gover- nment to grant what amounted to political prisoner status to jailed guerrillas. He was the first to die, on May 5, and nine others followed. Richard McAuley, chief spokesman for Sin Fein, the IRA's political arm, said the protesting inmates announced their decision in a statement smuggled from the prison's H-shaped cellblocks. "WE THE 'protesting political prisoners in the H-blocks and the men on hunger strike have reluctantly decided in the seventh month of the hunger strike to end our fast," it said. "We have been robbed of the hunger strike as an effective protest weapon principally because of the successful campaign waged against our distressed relatives by the Catholic hierarchy, aided and abetted by the Irish establishment, which took no effective action against the British government and did everything to encourage feelings of hopelessness among our kith and kin." "The success of this campaign meant that the British government could remain intransigent," the statement said. 1 ! r ) ANN ARBOR GOLD AND SILVER EXCHANGE 216 S.
