FORMER GRIDDER TACKLES MEDICINE Gallagher back in school The MichiganDaily-Thursday, October 1, 1981-Page 11 SPOR TS OF THE DAIL Y Pistons sign Tripucka By CHUCK JAFFE Unlike most former Michigan foot- ball players, Dave Gallagher is back in 4chool. At 6-4 and 235 pounds, the 29- year-old senior medical student still looks like a typical gridder. That's un- derstandable because it was only two ears ago that Gallagher quit playing ootball. AFTER A year with the Bears, Gallagher was traded to the New York Giants, where he played for two years. In 1977, he "retired" to go to medical school. "I'd been accepted at Michigan during the '76 season, and decided to go," Gallagher said. "I didn't want to Gallagher was a co-captain of Michigan's 1973 football squad. After graduating with All-American honors at defensive tackle, he was the 20th player selected in the National Football League draft, the second first-round pick of the Chicago Bears. GRIDDE PICKS Pennant fever is reaching epidemic proportions, and the big question in Detroit is whether the Tigers could hang on to first place. However, the players seemed more uptight on the field last night than usual. Is it the pennant race that has Gibson, and company highstrung? Is it that Jim Palmer's briefs are on too tight that gives him that pained expression? No, itN that unparalleled tension that comes from entering the Gr'iddes that makes ballplayers nervous. IF YOU WANT to share in the heat of the race with the Tigers, just drop off your Griddes at the Daily (420 Maynard) before midnight Friday, and you will be eligible to win the free one- item pizza from pizza Bob's and a chance to compete with the football "experts" from the Daily staff. 1. DAILY LIBELS at Indiana-Jones Lions defensive line coach Floyd Peters. "He could have ahd an 11- or 12- year career if he'd dedicated himself solely to football. He's still young, and I'm sure he could still play. He was a quick, strong, intelligent, and a damned good player." Gallagher, however, is not likely to come out of retirement again. Making the switch from professional athlete back to full-time student was hard enough. "I REALIZE now that I'm five or six years behind in age," Gallagher said, "and that places me at a little disad- vantage." Dr. John Gallagher, Dave's father, explains the transition differently. "All of a sudden he's one of 220 guys in a classroom where the professor doesn't care how he plays," the elder Gallagher said. "Quite often the professors don't follow football as much as the fans,,.and they probably looked at Dave as another big guy in the class." Upon graduation, Gallagher said that he plans to stay involved in sports, as an orthopedic surgeon. "I'M REALLY interested in sports medicine," he said. "I know what it's like not only to be a player, but to be an injured player. I think that will help me a lot. "If you have the chance to play pro football and you don't take it," Gallagher added, "then you'll never know what could have been. I still try to keep up, but med school keeps me so busy that there are times when I barely have time to sleep." If Dave Gallagher ever wants to escape the academic grind, he could always return to pro football. Not very many medical school students do that. PONTIAC, Mich. (AP)- The Detroit Pistons announced yesterday the signing of Notre Dame star Kelly Tripucka to a multiyear National Basketball Association contract. Although terms of the contract were not disclosed,,it has been reported that Tripucka's contract covers three years and guarantees him $600,000 whether or not he makes the team. DETROIT COACH Scotty Robertson said he expected to use Tripucka as a small forward and guard when the Pistons open training camp Friday at the University of Michigan's Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. Tripucka, a 6-foot-6, 230-pounder, denied reports that he didn't want to play for Detroit. However, the Bloomfield, N.J. native admitted he would rather have played in the East where he was raised. "I'm just happy as hell to be playing anywhere," Tripucka said. "There are a lot of people who never get this chance. I'm here to play and I'll give my best." . THE SIGNING OF Tripucka, who along with Indiana All- American Isiah Thomas was one of two first-round draft choices for the Pistons inthe 1981 college draft, gives Detroit a complete roster for the opening of training camp. Tripucka averaged more than 15 points a game over a span of 112 games in four seasons at Notre Dame, where he led the Fighting Irish in scoring in each of his last three seasons. Tripucka closed out his college career as Notre Dame's fourth leading scorer with 1,719 points behind Austin Carr, Adrian Dantley and Tom Hawkins. Chargers obtain Chandler SAN DIEGO (AP)- The San Diego Chargers, in need of a replacement for all-pro wide receiver John Jefferson, ob- tained fleet Wes Chandler from the New Orleans Saints yesterday. In exchange for Chandler, the third player selected in the 1978 National Football League draft, San Diego had to give up the No. 1 draft pick it received from Green Bay last week in the Jefferson deal, plus wide receiver Aundra Thompson and a third-round choice in 1982. The 5-foot-11, 186-pound Chandler, 25, set a Saints' record with 1,069 yards in 1979 and had the NFL's longest touchdown catch that year, an 85-yarder against San Francisco. His 205 yards in receptions against Atlanta in 1979 established another club record. Gallagher ....retires to medicine quit football, but I definitely wanted to start med school." When the Giants traded Gallagher to the Detroit Lions in 1978, he im- mediately "unretired." After a strong exhibition showing, he suffered a knee injury in the season opener, which sidelined him for the season. Gallagher returned for the Lions' dismal 2-14 campaign in 1979, but decided to retire again when the season ended. "WHEN I retired for the second time," Gallagher said, "I'd had some injuries, arid I realized that there is a future in medical school, whereas there is a limited future in football. Besides, after five years with the Bears, Giants, and Lions, I really couldn't see my career going anywhere." "His only problem was that he was trying to do two things," said Detroit ANNOUNCING HIGHLAND'S 4 DAY CAR SAVE A FORTL MAKING YOUJR SOUND LIKE, A MI Discover lying for 20' The Michigan Flyers is offering to anyone affiliated with the OF F YERS 4 Ap University of Michigan an introductory flying lesson for just $20.
