Navy is a good football team." -Michigan coach Bo Schembechler And so Schembechler set the tone for the weekly football luncheon yesterday. The Wolverine mentor did not gloat over the convin- cing Notre Dame victory, but chose instead to concentrate upon the Navy preparation. "Since 1977, they (Navy) are 26-11 including wins over Pittsburgh and they beat Washington by 14 points on national TV in Seattle, so don't tell me that Navy isn't a good football team," the * coach cautioned the press. SCHEMBECHLER emphasized one of the in- trinsic strengths of the Midshipmen. "You know a guy going to Navy is smart-a solid character. They don't make mistakes." Schembechler alluded to no interceptions and only two fumbles for the 2-0 Midshipmen. Invariably, though, the topic of the Notre Dame victory arose. "It (the victory) was the reverse of Wisconsin. Everything went good for us and everything went bad for Notre Dame," the coach reflected. Asked if the team would improve after the Wisconsin game, Schembechber remarked. "That was easy. Anything would be an im- provement over Wisconsin. Beating Notre 4Dame-no that's not easy.." SCHEMBECHLER pointed out that a produc- tive week of Notre Dame preparation ended any fears of a Michigan demise. "What encouraged me was the way we practiced. They were crushed after Wisconsin." "He (Smith) could've been down after Wisconsin, but he had a heckava week in practice. Sn ith knows what he's doing out there," Schembechler pointed out. "We all know he's got talent." Senior tailback Butch Woolfolk also received some recognition. "Woolfolk is getting better and better." Asked why the senior is improving, the coach said, "He runs with more power now. He's not as fancy. He's a speed and power run- ner." Schembechler mentioned that the Wolverines , must improve the passing game and receive , more consistency out of the defense, especially on the line. DAILY LIBELS at Edmund Fitzgerak Doug James at middle guard. "James is a pleasant surprise," the coach said. "He came in and did a good job." Elaborating on the defense, Schembechler noted, "The secondary improved and (Keith) Bostic was outstanding." Bostic was Michigan's second leading tackler against Notre Dame and was responsible for an important hit which deprived the Irish of a first down. After the Notre Dame synopsis, Schembechler turned into a bit of a predictor concerning the rest of the 1981 season. "It's going to be a topsy- turvy season. There will be a lot of close games. Only this time we don't have the luxury of losing or we're out of it. That's a lot of pressure to be playing under each week." But then again, pressure is no stranger to Michigan football.
