Senior Dave Levenick accounted for 98 tackles last season and returns to the inside linebacker post. Returning to the defensive backfield is David Green- wood, whofinished last year with 49 tackles and two interceptions. But while the Badger defense was busy keepin opponents out of the end zone, the offense was also being kept out of the scoring column. Wisconsin's offense finished dead last in the con- ference in total offense, with only 267.2 yards a game. It wasn't the rushing game that was the problem-the Badgers were fourth in the league with 198.9 yards a game. It was the pass that doomed Wisconsin last season. With only 68.4 yards a game, the Badgers finished last in the conference when it came to throwing the ball. "WE'VE GOT TO get our passing game going," admitted Wisconsin fullback Dave Mohapp. "If we can bring our passing up to the level of our rushing, we'll definitely be in a bowl game. I think if our offense gets going, our defense is definitely sound." Mohapp leads the list of returning Badger running backs. The 6-0, 216- pound senior carried for 518 yards last season, averaging 4.6 yards a carry. Tailback John Williams gained 540 yar- ds last year, while Gerald Green gained 264 yards. Junior John Josten and spohomore Jess Cole shared the quarterbacking duties last year, but Cole will probably get the nod to open this season behind the center. Cole threw for 274 yards on 23 completions in 1980, but also was in- tercepted five times. Wisconsin coach Dave McClain will be counting on Cole to pull the Badgers out of the Cellar in theBig Ten passing department this year. On the receiving end of Cole's aerials will be senior split end Tim Stracka, an honorable mention All-Big Ten choice last season who caught 28 passes for 462 yards, and Thad McFadden; a sophomore flanker from Flint who also returns punts and kickoffs for the Badgers. 8. Illinois The 1981 football season picture has cleared up slightly for Illinois head coach Mike White. Last April, not only the football team, but the entire Illini athletic program had three years' wor- th of sanctions levied against them by the Big Ten and Illinois was not sure whether or not it would have access to record-setting quarterback Dave Wilson for the '81 campaign. In August, the conference lessened the penalties to just one year and Wilson went south, to New Orleans to play for the NFL's Saints. So White can turn his attention to improving the Illini's 5-6 mark of last season. Irish, Navy invade.! *ND showdown tops non-con By GREG DeGULIS After the shocking loss in Madison last weekend, the non-conference games against Notre Dame and Navy are Michigan's chance to save face. Today's nationally televised clash with the Fighting Irish will give the Wolverines a golden opportunity to silence the critics and get revenge for last year's heartbreaker in South Bend. In today's matchup between the. Midwest's best, the rivalry remains the same but a few colorful changes have t . optimism in South Bend centers around the returning lettermen from last season's 9-2-1 Sugar Bowl team. The Irish have a letterman at every position including junior tailback Phil Carter, junior wingback Tony Hunter and All- American linebacker Bob Crable. Offensively; the-Notre Dame goal is diversity. "Our Offense is designed to enable us to throw a wide variety of dif- ferent formations at an opponent's defense.", Faust explained. In addition to the ever dangerous pair of Carter and Hunter, Faust can rely on senior tight end Dean Masztak and the trio of quarterbakcs sophomore Blair Kiel, senior Tom Koegel and senior Scott Grooms. Defensively, All-American Crable anchors an Irish unit which can boast of a 23 quarter streak without a touch- down. Joining Crable are junior linebackers Mark Zavagnin and Joe Rudzinski while seniors Pat Kramer and Joe Gramke will battle in the tren- ches with the likes of Bubba Paris and Ed Muransky. The Irish defense lacks the bulk of recent Notre Dame teams, but "we've got plenty of quickness to make up for that", Faust noted. In the kicking department, the Wolverine fans will never'forget Harry Oliver and the 51-yarder. Unfor- tunately, the left-footed wonder is back for the Irish to haunt the Wolverines. If the Wolverines think they can relax after Notre Dame, Navy may do what South Caroline did in 1980-surprise the Ann Arbor faithful. George Welsh's Midshipmen are coming off an 8-4 record and a Garden State Bowl bid. When the Navy mascot Billy XXII trots on the turf, the goat will be bringing along a solid defense and a shaky offense. The best performers include All-American candidates middle guard Tim Jordan, running back Eddie Meyers and placekicker Steve Fehr. Five returning lettermen anchor the' Midshipmen defensively, but offen- sively preseason injuried have riddled the offensive line and receiving corps. Junior Tom Tarquino will start at quar- terback and bring the option back into the Navy senior tig receiver. After ti Michigan schedule, tests of1 A Heisman Trophy is not out of the question for Ohio State's senior signal caller Art Schlichter. Schlichter has practically rewritten the entire Buckeye passing record book in just three years. His throwing and running capabilities are only matched by his leadership. He is definitely the premier quarterback in the conference, if not the country. 1-1 3 1 1I.I I--4 r ~SPREE GRME 1 a HEF JOUARTEPR s I I } 50C worth of FREE Pinball plus .1ONE MONTH "FREE GAME CARD ' Now you know FOCUS presents the best games in the best condtion i;own 1 Technician on duty every day.
