"A guy like Carter can have a tremendous impact n a defense, because you cannot ignore him," said Schembechle. , Handling the tight end spot for the second straight year is Norm Betts, a senior with junior eligibility. Betts was the second leading receiver on the team last season behind Carter with 17 cat- ches for 161 yards. Wtih-a 3.87 grade point average, Betts was named to the Big Ten All-Academic team in 1979 and 1980, and the second team All-American Academic squad last year. With the loss of Mitchell at split end, three players are fighting for the star- ting nod. Junior Kenney Gear had the in- side track, but he will be lost for the season after injuring his kidney while completing a pass pattern. Senior Fred Brockington, a transfer from the UCLA and sophomore Vince Bean saw limited action last season, but Bean looks like the starter this season. The 6-1, 185- pounder from Southfield has 4.49 speed in the forty, and also competes as a long jumper for the Wolverine tracksters. The pride and joy of this year's offen- sive squad will be an offensive line that is the envy of many pro teams. Senior Bubba Paris, at 6-6 and 270 pounds, and Ed Muransky, a senior with junior eligibility, at 6-7 and 275 pounds, form a tackle duo that is undoubtedly the best in the country. Both were named to various pre-season All-American teams. Starting at right guard is Kurt Becker, who is possibly the best guard in the country, according to Schembechler. Becker, at 6-6 and 260 pounds, has star- ted 24 consecutive games coming into the 1981 season. FILLING THE large shoes of the departed Lilja at center will be either sophomore Tom Dixon, or junior Jeff Felten. D tice as th 230-pound Powers la pounds,'b year.
