The linebackers will continue to be the strength of the defense with seniors Jack Squirek, Ron Ferrari, Kelvin Atkins and John Venegoni all retur- ning for starting roles. 9. Michigan State After finishing tied with Michigan for the Big Ten lead in 1978, the Michigan State Spartans fell to seventh in 1979, and dropped all the way to ninth last year. And John Leister, the Spartans' quarterback, readily admits, "We're not a strong team this year." But, he adds, "we're stronger than last year." Certainly 1980 will not be held in fond esteem by many Michigan State fans. The Spartans finished the year at 3-8,2- 6 in the league. Second-year head coach Frank "Muddy" Waters is expecting this season to be an improvement over his rookie campaign. "We're going to be better," said Waters. "We had a good recruiting year, we're more experien- ced, and I think we'll be a better team." LEADING THE WAY for Michigan State this year is Leister, one of the few bright spots on last year's team. "In my opinion, John is as fine a quarterback as you'll find in collegiate circles," said Waters. "He was the fellow that kept us in so many of the ballgames that we weren't supposed to be in last year." The 6-3, 191-pound junior from Great Falls, Mont. threw for 1,559 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, and will ser- ve as the team's co-captain this year. With so. many weaknesses, Waters said, "If we don't play some freshmen, we could be in a lot of trouble, because we don't have that much depth." One of the newcomers that will probably see action immediately is tailback Aaron Roberts, a 6-1, 181-pound speedster -from Detroit Catholic Central. One of the state's premier players last season, Roberts had his choices for a college narrowed down to Michigan and Notre Dame, but decided on Michigan State because he said that the Spartans needed him more. "I think Roberts is capable of breaking into the starting lineup," said Waters. OTHER PLAYERS to watch on Michigan State's offense are Derek Hughes, a running back who is coming off a knee injury that kept him out of ac- tion for most of last season, split end Ted Jones, who led all Spartan receivers last year with 568 yards on 40 catches, and tackle Jeff Wiska, a 6-4, 260-pounder who is the best player on a weak offensive line.- No. 57 34 27 65 19 82 3 40 13 28 25 15 12 9 83 63 1 10 92 21 36 56 26 42 90 18 64 69 88 71 32 29 51 17 20 54 39 50 22 6 7 31 48 33 Name Anderson, Tim Armstrong, Greg Bean, Vincent Becker, Kurt Bergeron, Bob Betts, Norm Body, Marion Boren, Mike Bostic, Keith Bracken, Don Brockington, Fred Burgei, Jerry Burgess, Fritz Carpenter, Brian Carthens, Milt Carraway, Winfred Carter, Anthony Cohen, Jeff Coles, Cedric Cooper, Evan Czarnota, Mike Cana, Robert Davis, Nate Davis, Ricky DeFelice, Vince Dickey, B.
