The Michigan Daily-Friday, September 18, 1981-Page 13 er hopes to ignite Wolverines By DREW SHARP Bob Ufer may not-be in the press box for Michigan football play-by-play, but that Qnnot stop "Mr. Meechigan" from expressing his enthusiasm in other ways. The 61-year-old Ufer, who is recovering from surgery, will give a pep talk to the Wolverine squad today as they prepare to face Notre Dame tomorrow. The talk n will be similar to the one Ufer gave before last January's Rose Bowl victory over Washington. -%~ v "WHENEVER YOU get behind or things aren't going quite the way we'd like it," V Ufer cheered in Pasadena. "Or when you're on a long drive toward the goal line 5 n , and you need a little extra support and energy from the crowd. ',Raise your fists high into the air and the students will stand up and cheer like they've never cheered before, and we'll help you score that touchdown." y The response to that plea at the Rose Bowl was phenomenal and Ufer hopes he can generate that same type of enthusiasm for the battle with the Irish. x fn another effort to generate enthusaism for tomorrow's game, Michigan fan .r e Serry Zonca has rewritten the Notre Dame fight song to suit the Wolverine par- tisan. :i S .?.... .. ... ... ,.r .: ::.riff.x::+ ":.:.":{ i m ""::.. ."r..,. :} i~ .. . Field hockey: By MARTHA CRALL Youth and experience seem to contrasting elements of team pla according to Michigan field I coach, Candy Zienteck, those aj two key elements which will dete the success of this year's team. For 1981, Zientek is lucky enoi have 15 underclassmen with v experience. Of the 25 players on t. season roster, Zientek has the lux only eight upperclassmen, whic enable the younger players to se( ty of action. IN ZIENTEK'S first two seas head coach, defense has bee trademark of her Michigan 1 which have recorded 14 shutout victories. But unless there is a si at the goalie position, this se biggest question mark, the defens not remainsostingy. Sophomore Nancy Hirsh is ti Maugh returning goalie and will have to ...leading goal-scorer for the starting position Youth and experience mark this year's team newcomers Jonnie Lee Terry and San- dra Smith. Zientek feels that the Wolverines strength will lie in the midfield positions where senior Betsy Coke and sophomore Kathy McCarthy return at the link positions. Co-captains Dee Jones and Julie Forrestel anchor the halfback spots along with Denise Com- by, who was the team's third leading scorer with nine points as a freshman last season. JUNIOR MARTY Maugh is expected to lead the forwards in Zientek's effort to produce more offense in 1981. The Ann Arbor native ranks as the team's active scoring leader and last season paced the stickers with 17 goals to ac- count for more than 40 per cent of Michigan's season total. Sara Forrestel, ninth on the career goal scoring chart after just one year here, Alex Callam and Miriam Pickus return up front to help Maugh in the of- fensive effort. Heidi Ditchendorf and Tracy Gibbs return at the sweeper position and Julie Browne and freshmen Lisa Schofield and Alison Johnson will be counted as well in the Wolverines quest to improve its 11-8 record of a year ago.
