(Continued from Page 1) Angelo Dundee's advice to his fighter was apparently succeeding after Leonard started to counter-punch com- petitively with Hearns. "LEONARD MIGHT be giving Hear- ns too much respect ,in the early roun- ds," commented ringside commen- tator, Dr. Ferdie Percheco. This might have been the case as Hearns appeared to lose confidence af- ter each successful Leonard round. All three ringside judges had Hearns ahead on their cards before he was TKO'd by the consensus welterweight and WBA junior middleweight cham- pion. The early rounds went as expected, with Sugar Ray Leonard circling Hear- ns looking for an early advantage. APPEARING NIGHTLY at 7 p.m. Angell Hall Auditorium D However, Hearns controlled the early rounds, jabbing Leonard consistently while Sugar Ray was only able to get occasional flurries off. At the conclusion of the fifth round Hearns, with his confidence growing started to mock Sugar Ray's antics. However, this tactic apparently backfired as, Sugar Ray finally found the range and connected repeatedly over Hearns' lower left arm to control the fight during the middle rounds. After a barrage in the sixth, seventh, and eighth rounds Hearns and Sugar Ray switched roles. Tommy the boxer, Sugar Ray the puncher. The move ap- parently worked for Tommy as he won the ninth and 10th rounds shaking off the effects of tender ribs. Edwin Rosario led off the undercard of the Hearns-Leonard fight with an impressive 10-round unanimous decision over James Martinez. The vic- tory was Tosario's 20th straight and it marked the first time he was unable to knock out his opponent.
