Collins, according to Dr. Joseph Torg, sustained the injury to his right knee anterior cruciate lateral miniscus and will have to undergo surgery. HARVEY POLLACK, 76ers' director of public relations, said assistant general manager John Nash was notified of the latest Collins' setback yesterday by Collins' agent, Herb Rudoy of Chicago. General Manager Pat Williams is in Israel. Pollack said Rudoy told Nash that Collins was hurt while practicing Mon- day at the University of Pennsylvania. The knee was damaged on a cut to the basket. Rudoy said Colins would have to undergo surgery later this week. Neither Torg nor Collins was available for comment. Torg was reported in surgery and Colins' home telephone was unanswered. COLLINS, WHO would have started his ninth season with the Sixers, played only 12 games last season because of a stress fracture to his right foot on Nov. 7. Collins, 30, has been recognized not only as an outstanding outside shot, but one of the best guards in the league moving without the ball. In eight years he scored 7,427 points for a 17.9 average. Coach Billy. Cunningham said the only word that could express his feelings was "sorrow." Cunningham said he never knew a, player who worked so hard to come back from injuries. Cunningham said that because of the injuries to so many areas, and now with two damaged knees, he doubted if Collins could play again in the NBA. In a statement released by the club, President Eddie Einhorn and board chairman Jerry Reinsdord said: "GIVEN THE current emotional climate on both sides of the suspension, we have decided that it would be in the best interest of both Jimmy and the ball club that the suspension not be lifted and that any decision on his future em- ployment with. the White Sox be deferred until the season has ended." Spokesman Ken Valdiserri said the two would make no futher comments. Piersall's suspension last Wednesday stemmed from remarks he made about the players' wives during a television show. In announcing the move, Einhorn said Piersall would continue to be paid, and said a decision on his future be put off to avoid any "rash action." On the TV show, Piersall remarked, "Each ballclub should have a clinic on- ce a week for wives because I don't think they know what baseball really is." After another White Sox' announcer, Harry Caray, said that the wives and girl friends of the team's players tell the players what the broadcasters say, about them during the game, Piersall described the wives, using a slang term, as women "looking to get married that want a little money, a lit- tle security and a big, strong-looking ballplayer." Woodcock traded SAN DIEGO (AP) - The San Diego Chargers acquired six-year defensive tackle John Woodcock from the Detroit Lions yesterday for an unspecified National Football League draft choice, Woodcock, a third-round draft choice out of Hawaii in 1976, left the Lions after eight games last season and did not report this year. He was on the Lions' reserve-did not report list and was placed on the Chargers' reserve list. A San Diego spokesman said the'NFL has been petitioned to grant an exem- ption that would allow Woodcock to be eligible to play after two games. Woodcock, 27, missed the 1979 season with a back injury after an outstanding 1978 season. He was second on the Lions in sacks with 10 and third in solo tackles with 66.
