The Michigan Daily Bo points to defer d-V1," N N By DREW SHARP With the shock of Saturday's 21-14 defeat to Wisconsin still showing on his face, Michigan coach Bo Schembechler tried to focus the attention of his weekly press conference to this week's Notre Dame game. But there was no way of avoiding the inevitable question, "What happened?" "I've never had a team play so poorly, in all my 11 years of coaching here at Michigan, than they did out in Wisconsin-never," said Schem- bechler. "A lot of guys did not play up to their potential." SCHEMBECHLER SEEMED to vent most of his barrage to the defense, which gave up an uncharacteristic 439 total yards to the Badgers. Ncftembecftler to stay with Smiti "When I came into the season, I wa mainly worried about the defensiv front positions," Schembechler adde "Now I'm worried about all1 positions. If your defense doesn tackle, it's going to have a hard tim Guys were just sliding through ou tackles, you cannot do that and expe to win." Schembechler has already decidedt make one change in defense. "EVAN COOPER will be starting the defensive backfield against Notr GRIDDE PICKS tat QB' as: Dame," Schembechler said. "I'm going ve to have the four best tacklers in the d. secondary and Cooper is definitely one 11 of them. I'm not exactly sure at this 't time who he will replace in the secon- e. dary." ur Schembechler did not hold much ct higher praise for his offensive unit, but he defended sophomore quarterback to Steve Smith who, in his first start, com- pleted only three passes in 18 attempts in and three interceptions. To say the re least, Schembechler was not pleased that Smith's primary receiver Satur- day was Wisconsin defensive back Matt Vanden Boom, the recipient of all three interceptions. "Smith did not have a good day passing at all," said the Wolverine mentor. "At times, he seemed to be rushing his passes and all of that is a matter of timing and he's going to have to work on that. But make no doubt about it, Steve Smith is my quarter- back. What gets me is that we could have won even with his performance." NOT LEAVING any stone unturned, Schembechler voiced dismay over placekicker Ali Haji-Sheikh's dismal showing, muffing field goal attempts of 41 and 46 yards. "I only had one regret throughout the game," he joked. "Not going for that ise damn first down when we had fourth and one. I said to myself, 'Go for the automatic three because you've gota great kicker.' and he wound up missing it." As far as offensive changes for the Irish game was concerned, Schem- bechler felt that Lawrence Ricks would. definitely have to be used more. "RICKS IS our best all-around back and he is going to play a lot more foot-, ba ," noted Schembechler. "He only' got two carries against Wisconsin. He's. got to get the ball more. It's not that I'm saying that one back is better than the next, but it's just that I want Ricks to4 play more of a vital role in our offense." Despite the bad grades Schembechler gave his troops, he still does not leave' out the possibility of the Wolverines spending another New Year's Day in Pasadena. "It won't take a miracle for us to go,. back to the Rose Bowl again this season," said Schembechler. "I think you're going to see a lot of defeats in the conference. I said all along that,. Wisconsin would be the most improved team in the conference. Well, there are* other greatly improved teams. Look at Iowa. They upset Nebraska and North-_ western just missed beating Indiana, so there is going to be some good com- petition in the Big Ten." At least Schembechler can expect to have a healthy squad facing the Irish, as Michigan escaped Madison injury- free. Remarked Schembechler, "You can':t get hurt when you play like that." Poor Bo had little to be happy about this week. Not only did his squad drop the game to Wisconsin last weekend, but he couldn't even win the one-item pizza from Pizza Bob's with his gridde picks. The victor was Jay Hill of West Quad with 16 correct choices. Well Bo, you've got another chance, just drop your selection-at the Daily, 420 Maynard before mid-night Friday. 1.
