Call 483-5973 after 10 a.m. dT DETROIT-Neither the beautiful spring weather nor the excitement generated by a home opener could comfort 50,687 Detroit fans, as their Tigers dropped an 11-inning, 9-6 decision to the Kansas City Royals at Tiger Stadium, extending Detroit's losing streak to seven games. With the score tied 6-6 in the top of the 11th inning, Royals' centerfielder Willie Wilson tripled down the right field foul line off reliever Aurelio Lopez. Lopez struck out the next batter, and handed George Brett an. intentional pass to set up a possible force play at second. WILLIE AIKENS then delivered a sacrifice fly, scoring Wilson,' whi h proved to be the winning run for firt- year manager Jim Frey's team. Kansas City added two more runs in the inning to ice the victory. Lopez- 'Senor Smoke"-suffered his second defeat of the young season, while Kansas City submariner Dan Quisenberry notched his first victory in as many decisions. Detroit missed a golden opportunity going into the top half of the ninth, as the Bengals led 6-4. Wilson's bases- loaded single just out of the reach of Tiger first baseman Jason Thompson, brought the Royals to within one. Sparky Anderson replaced Pat Underwood with veteran righthander Jack Billingham. WITH RUNNERS on first and third, the Tiger reliever faced Frank White, White almost allowed the Tigers to turn a double play, but barely beat the throw at first, scoring John Wathan and allowing the Royals to tie the game. The Tigers gave their faithful a big thrill in the first inning, scoring four times and sending Kansas City starting pitcher Paul Splittorff to an early shower. Steve Kemp's sacrifice fly drove in Lynn Jones from third, enabling the Tigers to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Lance Parrish singled, Thompson doubled to score him and John Wockenfuss' single drove home Thompson to make it 3-0. Tom Brookens' run scoring single capped the Detroit barrage, spotting starter SCORES NBA Playoffs Semifinals Philadelphia 96, Boston 93 Baseball American League Kansas City 9, Detroit 6 (11 inn.) ROZEMA LOOKEI impressive through the first four ihnings, setting down all 12 batters he faced.'In the fifth, however, the Royals shelled him for four runs, prompting Sparky Anderson to send in relief ace John Hiller. The 37- year-old southpaw held the Royals in check until Anderson replaced him with Underwood in the top of the eighth inning. In the Tiger eighth, Alan Trammell was the hero, driving in Parrish and Champ Summers with his bases-loaded single, breaking the deadlock and giving the Tigers a 6-4 lead. Detroit, sporting the American League's worst record at 1-7, will seek to end its seven-game losing streak today, as they face these same Kansas City Royals at 2:15 p.m. at Tiger Stadium. Used books fall into several categories, each of which - because of the law of supply and demand - has its own price tag. Let's explore these various categories for your guidance. CLASS I. CLOTHBOUND A textbook of current copyright - used on our campus - and which the Teaching Department involved has approved for re- use in upcoming semesters- has the highest market value. If ULRICH'S needs copies of this book wp will offer a minimum of 50% off the list price for copies in good physical condition. When we have sufficient stock of a title for the coming semester, ULRICH'S will offer a "WHOLESALE PRICE" which will be explained later in this article. (THIS IS ONE REASON FOR SELLING ALL YOUR USED BOOKS AT ONCE!) CLASS II. PAPERBOUND Paperback are classified in two groups: A. Text Paperbacks; B. Trade Paperbacks A. Text Paperbacks will be purchased from you as Class I books above. B. Trade Paperbacks would draw an approximate offer of 25% of the list price when in excellent condition. CLASS III. Some of the above Class I or Class I books will be offered which have torn bindings, loose pages, large amounts of highlighting and under- lining, orother physical defects. These will be priced down according to the estimated cost of repair or saleability. CLASS IV. i '! fib, ,' i ' k s .;( © By DREW SHARP Michigan's baseball team will have a battle on its hands this weekend when it visits Minnesota today and Wisconsin, on Sunday in a pair of doubleheaders. Both teams were pre-season picks to capture the Big Ten title. The Gophers are only 8-8 thus far, but I *.1i I, GRADUATED CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF '80 As you graduate and embark on your long-await- ed nursing career, you owe it to yourself to find out about the opportunities that are available for you at Hurley Medical Center. Hurley is a medical center offering much more than just general care for it's patients. Besides the basic services one would expect, Hurley serves the area with many highly specialized programs. Orientation for new employees is a minimum of 6 weeks. The length of the program is determined by the adapt- ability of the individual. Hurley offers competitive wages and an excellent benefit package. For more information, contact: Wolverine coach Bud Middaugh is still very concerned about them. oThe Gophers' top hitter is outfielder Tom Steinbach, who boasts a .412x average. The leading RBI man is second baseman Gary Jost with 14. Fir- st baseman Phil Johnson tops the team in round-trippers with five. The pitching staff is anchored by lef- thander Ed Roch, who sports a 3-1 record and a 3.86 ERA. Roch will probably start the first game of the Michigan twinbill. Wisconsin's 4-12 record is quite deceiving, according to Middaugh. "Wisconsin was second in the Big Ten last year and they have all of their pitchers of last season returning, so you know that they are tough," he said. The key hitter for the Badgers is designted hitter James Barwick, who is batting at a .367 clip. Providing the Badger muscle is centerfielder Frank Shellenback, who leads the team in homers and runs batted in with five and 12, respectively. As for the Wolverines, junior pitcher Mark Clinton, a standout in recent outings, will get the call for the opening Minnesota game. Steve Ontiveros will probably earn the nod in the nightcap. Scott Dawson and Scott Elam will receive the starting assignments for the Wisconsin contests. BILLBOARD The first annual Burns Park Run will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. Offering one, three and six mile races, the cour- se will wind through the historic residential areas surrounding Burns Park, which is located on Wells Street in Ann Arbor. Entries are still being ac- cepted at Tortoise and Hare Running Center, Stein & Goetz Sporting Goods, Athletes Shop and Playmakers. For further details, call 769-9510 or 769-8349. ATTENTION COLLEGE GRADUATES If you need a good job with a solid future, why not try the United States Air Force? There's real oppor- turity for advancement, and you can earn your commission by com- pleting the three-month Ar Force Officer Training SchoolPlus you receive an excellent salary ...executive experience...sworld- wide assiginments. ,;r" a a Each semester various professors decide to change text for a given course. These decisions on change of textbooks are made in echelons of THINKING AND AUTHORITY far above the level of your local book retailers, AND ULRICH'S HAS NO PART IN THE DECISION. (Quite often we have MANY copies of the old title of which you have only ONE.) However, ULRICH'S does enter the picture by having connections with over 600 other bookstores throughout the country. We advertise these discontinued books and sell many of them at schools where they are still being used. ULRICH'S does this as a service to you and pays you the BEST POSSIBLE price when you sell them to us with your currently used books. CLASS V. Authors and publishers frequently bring out new editions. When we "get caught" with an old edition, let's accept the fact that it has no value on the wholesale market, and put it on the shelf as a reference book or sell it cheap for a bargain reference book. You will find that you come out best in the long run when you sell ALL your books to ULRICH'S. ..r 40 Nurse Recruitment HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER One Hurley Plaza Flint. MI 48502 I ii I
