The Michigan Daily-Thursday, April 17, 1980-Page 11 Karzen: from tennis family to Blues no.1 By KENT WALLEY Tennis has always been a part of Kathy Karzen's life. As a little girl she watched her family play from court side. Sometimes, she even got to hit the ball around for a few minutes before they left. Karzen,i'now a senior at the University of Michigan and the Wolverines num- ber one singles player, came from a family of racquet swingers. Her father always had an interest in tennis and her older brother played for Michigan a few years agog At age 14 Kathy began playing tennis competitively. Since then she has gone *ough many phases to arrive at her spot on Michigan's team. "At first all I.wan- ted to do was win. Then I worried about how I looked on the court," said Karzen. "Now I set goals for myself." One of these goals is to win the Big Ten championships (held in Ann Arbor this year on April 25-27). As she says, "The Big Tens would be the frosting on the cake." The cake (her career) includes: the state singles title the last two years, first place in the Buckeye Open in singles a season ago, being undefeated in regionals play last year, and winning 30 matches throughout the '79 season. Coach Oliver- Owens said of Karzen, "She's one of the top 20 players in the nation. Potentially, she could be in the top 10. She has the biggest first serve I've n of a girl anywhere in college. She likes to boom and she likes to crush. She's a hitter." One of her biggest wins came this year when she defeated a two time All- American. Karzen said, "She (the All-American) wasn't ready for me. I was hungry for a victory." The team also looks up to Karzen for leadership. Although there is no captain this year, she was the captain in both her sophomore and junior years. Said Owens, "She's an excellent leader. She relates well to everybody. Kathy is not a cockey number one (singles) player." Karzen is majoring in political science and is also receiving a teaching cer- tificate in history. As her career at Michigan winds down Karzen is not sure what s e wants to do in tennis. She said, "I'm very interested in coaching," and then ad- , "I might play in Europe this summer, on some of the European circuits." RES Harper chooses Illinois By STAN BRADBURY' All-American guard Derek Harper finally ended one of the nation's biggest recruiting battles as 'he signed a scholarship with Illinois yesterday. The 6-3 Harper made the announcement at a press conference in his hometown of West Palm Beach, Florida. Michigan, under new head coach Bill Frieder, had been in hot pursuit of Har- per and was one of the four schools Harper had narrowed his selections to. "You feel bad when you lose a kid like Derek, but that's the way things go. He's just another addition of a great player to the Big Ten," said Frieder. Frieder said earlier that he thought the Wolverines were close to signing Harper and that Harper had said ver- bally on at least one occasion that he planned on going to Michigan. Harper averaged 27 points a game at North Shore High School and led his team to the state Class AAA champion- ship. He was recruited to the Fighting Illini by Illinois assistant coach Tony Yates, who has been to Florida to see Harper once a week since December.
