The Michigan Daily-Friday, April 11, 1980-Page 11 FOUSSIANES LEADS WOLVERINES Pros after Blue batsman By DREW SHARP r Michigan baseball has served as a springboard for many major leaguers. Detroit Tiger all-star catcher Bill Freehan starred with the Wolverines. Larry Sorenson was the heart of the Blue pitching staff and went on to become an all-star for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1978. And last year:, Rick Leach was the number one draft pick of the Tigers, who have visions of the former quarterback occupying the Foussianes was the All-Big Ten shortstop. He led the league in hitting with a .452 average, beating teammate Leach for the title. Foussianes had a .369 average for the entire season, which also led the Wolverines. WHILE NOTED for hitting, Foussianes handled all but 4 of his 153 chances in the field flawlessly, for an impressive .974 percentage. This year, Foussianes will be looked upon as a leader for this extremely young Wolverine club. "I try to help all of the young kids," said Foussianes. "Sometimes they come to me and I'll give them some advice on the finer points of the game. I have a lot of help because we have four other seniors on the squad. "I DON'T CONSIDER myself a leader but I'll pass along my years of experience to the other players if they want it." Foussianes was a draft choice of the Montreal Expos in 1979 draft but chose to remain in school. Many major league experts view Foussianes as a definite first-round draft pick and quite possibly the number one player picked overall. "I doubt that I will be the top player chosen," said the Birmingham native. "I consider myself a good all-around player but I think there are other players who are better. I'm not as fast as some other players and that could turn against me but I think I make up for that in other areas like hitting and fielding." THIS YEAR, -THE Wolverines' dugout is not occupied by 17-year coach Moby Benedict but by former Miami of Ohio coach, Bud Middaugh. Foussianes compared Middaugh to ex-coach Benedict: "They both are similar in that they like to stress the fundamentals of the game and like I said before, they both are winners. The thing I liked most about the two is that they both have such a strong dedication to the game." FOUSSIANES ADMITTED that he was somewhat surprised with the team's performance so far this spring since returning from Florida. (The club's record is 5-2.) "I really think we haven't played the high caliber teams as of yet. I don't think we've been tested yet but I'm very pleased at the way our pitching staff has performed this season." All of the Wolverines five victories have been shutouts. "SCOTT DAWSON and Steve Ontiveros have really been impressive this year along with the rest of our pitching corps. Hopefully, they'll get even better as the season wears on." Foussianes comes out of Birmingham Groves High school and he carried with him some impressive accomnplishments. He was. an all- league player in 1976 and was also selected to the Detroit News' all-state team in the same year. ' Foussaines is a student of the business school and majoring in general business. But his first dream in life is to play pro ball and chances are that his dream will be fulfilled.
