In a situation where it recently had the chance to enhance Michigan's creditability in the eyes of the public, the athletic department has failed miserably. Initially, it appeared that foot- ball coach Bo Schembechler had simply acted decisively against something we all understood - an extreme violation of his training rules. Yet when he saw the furor the five player suspensions created Bo backtracked, making every effort to muddy the waters. It's expected that the Daily and the other local media will play up such an incident - the suspen- sion of key performers on a nationally ranked team (one of the most respected programs in the country), is tremendous spor- ts copy. Yet Bo completely blamed the media for the monster he created. Drug usage by any athlete is hardly a revelation. It was Schembechler's quick action that caught everyone by storm. in his effort to protect the players and his program, Bo's actions only increase the wild speculation he so criticizes. Par- ticularly absurd was his statement that no criminal act' was involved, juxtaposed in a Detroit newspaper ivith a suspended player quoting Bo in a team meeting as saying he'd ob- tained evidence directly im- plicating the suspended players. A clarification of the circum- stances surrounding the issue was badly needed but was not for- thcoming. Too bad, because everyone involved would be a lot' better off at this point. Paul D. Tebias Mike Theus A random sampling of 121 University students were asked to respond to the following question: "Do you support or op- pose President Carter's proposal to boycott the Summer Olympics in Moscow?" Mike Weiss, an LSA junior, said, "I sympathize with the athletes ... I hate to see them disappointed. Our not going won't do a lot politically." Another LSA junior, Greg Sun- day, remarked, "Carter reacted to the Afghanistan invasion and we should stick to our guns." BROOKS SAID although he was hoping to get a coaching offer from an NHL team, he did not have a concrete offer. Among the pro teams Brooks says he has talked with are the Los Angeles Kings, the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Rangers. A lot of companies will offer you an important sounding title. But how many offer you a really important job? In the Navy, you get one as soon as you earn your com- mission. A job with responsibility. A job that requires skill and leadership. A job that's more than just a job, because it's also an adventure. If that's the kind of job you're looking for, speak to your local recruiter.
