But the big question of the day was not answered as Derek Harper of West Palm Beach, Fla., kept college recruiters at bay by delaying his an- nouncement a week. Harper, rated as the top strong guard in the nation, is one big fish left in the pond that Frieder hopes doesn't get away. "Without Harper it has been a good recruiting year," said Frieder. "If we do get Derek it will then become a great year for us." THE ADDITION of Harper to an already superb recruiting class would give the Wolverines perhaps the finest take of prep stars of any college in the nation. Thelast great recruiting year the Wolverines had was the signing of Phil Hubbard and Rickey Green, which led to the finest two Michigan teams of the decade. Frieder was in Florida at the begin- ning of the week talking with Harper once again because the 6-4 guard was expected to make his decision yester- day, but Frieder said that Harper is delaying his announcement for about one week. "Derek's one of the most sought after players in the nation. When I saw him this week he gave strong indications he's coming to Michigan. Every time I see him, he says he's coming here, but. then I can never get him to sign anything," Frieder said. There is reportedly a lot of local pressure on Harper to stay in Florida. STRANGELY ENOUGH, Michigan has already signed one of Harper's high school teammates to a football scholar- 'Tim McCormick, left, and Derek Har-' per are two faces Wolverine basketball fans would like to see together on the court next season.t ton III and Dean Hopson and 7-2 Canadian center Jon Antonides.
