Mtartin will replace Dan Farrell, who resigned join a Toronto investment firm after being the ad coach for seven years.I "I'm very happy to be back at Michigan," saidt e 38-year-old Martin. "I see this job as a great pportunity and a great challenge. Dan Farrell0z as extended his full coopegation to me and to the ew program." E TEAM had a short meeting with Martin erday to introduce himself and explain why e felt he was qualified for the job. "I'm very npressed with him so far," said freshman oaltender Paul Fricker. "He shook all our han- s and set up individual meetings with everyone or Thursday." "We're delighted to have someone with Wilf's,,, >ackground," said Canham. "He captained a' Vlichigan hockey team as a junior and is the type f person around whom our alumni will rally to elp the program. He not only was a college and hockey player, but has been involved in anizing hockey programs." Martin played at Michigan from 1963-65 under Al Renfrew and was a member of the Wolverines' last NCAA championship team in 1964. FOR THE last eight years, he has been the manager of the ice arena in the Students Recreation Center at the University of Colorado. He has also helped with the formation of the club hockey program there. recruiting. "In the last four or five years, college hockey has become more and more European, with the criss-crossing and passing." CANHAM SAID Tuesday that he had inter- viewed three men for the coaching job. Martin and Giordano, who is highly respected by the .team, were two candidates, but Canham refused to mention the other person. Giordano has been offered to stay on with Mar- tin as an assistant, but he has not yet made a decision as to whether or not he will. "I'm hoping both assistant coaches will stay on, (the other is graduate assistant Don Boyd) but-I don't know at this time what their plans are," Martin said. Martin attended Michigan for three years and played hockey for two of them. His eligibility en- ded after his junior year because of the rule prohibiting any player entering the league at 20 years or older from competing as a senior. MARTIN THEN transferred to the University of Alberta and played hockey under Clare Drake. He also played six seasons in the International, American, and Western professional hockey leagues. 0 I LergI honored Michigan's Dan Lerg has been named to the West squad for the first annual East-West All-Star hockey game. The teams, made up entirely of seniors, will meet Thursday, April 10, at the St. Paul Civic Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota. The East team will be composed of players from the ECAC, while the West will be made up of players from the WCHA and the CCHA. Joining Lerg as likely starters are the following senior All-Americans: Dave Feamster (Colorado College); Greg Meredith (Notre Dame); Tim Harrer (Minnesota); Mark Taylor (North Dakota).
