Page 10-Tuesday March 25, 1980-The Michigan Daily V I How does long 12 hours last? Practically Hiroshima (Continued from Page 5) any one time created a rich, textured and uniquely oriental rhythmic background that accentuated every number. The use of the traditional koto (an instrument which is. played similarly to the way one would play th strings of a piano) with its soun somewhere between that of a harp and classical guitar added a unique dimen- sion to the overall sound that is the crucial difference in the fusion of Hiroshima and that of other bands. PLAYING ALL eight compositions from their album, the group was par- ticularly effective in two tremendous compositiomns entitled "Lion Dance," and "DaDa". June, classically trained on the koto, maintained the image off stoic oriental discipline as she utilized her instrument's unique nature to derive alternating glissando and piz- zicato effects. In weaving the most structured solos of the evening, June produced cascading chromatics as a foundation for Peter Hata's solos in each song. The sensual filigree of the koto enhanced the understated but ef- fective lines of Hata's guitar in both songs. The composition "Never Ever" is a light pro-funk tune that establishe4 Hiroshima as among the best in this mu4sical category. Jesse Acuna's vocals were surprisingly strong as he exhibited fine vocal stylings showcasing a smooth and melodic voice. Acuna could be more loose in his stage presence, but he relaxed as the concert went along. Unfortunately, female vocalist Teri Kusmoto wasn't nearly as successful in providing background vocals for Acuna. Her breathy vocals detracted from the song as they were too soft to be audible. As a lead vocalist, Kusmoto could develop to'be a strong vocalist. At her best, she has a light, breezy style, but more often her inability to belt out a lyric over the heavy accompaniment of the band proved her to be ineffectual as a vocalist. However, like Acuna, she improved as the concert 'progressed; and she was much better during the band's two encores,. In short, the band attempts to weave a fine line balancing its American cultural perspectives, along with its eastern ancestral identity without sublimating either perspective. It would be easy for one identity to sub- merge the other; or for both identities to dissolve into a homogenous fusion with little identity. But the group shows a developed ability to differentiate and maintain the precarious balance bet- ween cultures. It is for this reason, thatE with experience and maturity, Hiroshima could become the definitive band for culturally expressive music in American society.
