The loss brought the Bruins down to earth after a late-season surge that saw them come out of nowhere and pull off a string of upsets en route to the national finals. AS HE HAS done all year for the Metro Conference champions, the flying Griffith -put, on a sensational shooting performance by hitting his sosthrough a maze of tough UCLA deeders. The All-lAlmerican guard .kept his team in the game in the first half with 11 points and then scored 12 more after intermission, including the winning shot on a soft jumper from the outside. That field goal provided the nation's second-ranked team with a 56-54 lead with 2:17 remaining, and the Bruins then literally threw the game away when James Wilkes tossed an inbounds pass downcoufrt over the head of a teammate. TWO FOUL shots by substitute Derek Smith in the last minute nailed down the victory for the Cardinals and cap- ped a frantic defensive struggle during THE FINALISTS and near- finalists squared off in the NCAA basketball championships yesterday, as Purdue thrashed Iowa in the consolation game, 75- 58; at right, the Boilermaker's Joe Barry Carroll shows his elation with teammate Kevin Stallings at the outcome. Griffith, who said he was dedicating the tounm t to 'a friend stricken} with cancer, was lifted up by a crowd of touisville supporters and carried around the court on their shoulders as he lifted his index finger signifying that the Cardinals were No. 1 in the country. In the consolation game, held earlier yesterday, towering Joe Barry Carroll scored 35 points to trigger Purdue to a 75-58 victory Monday night over Big Ten colleague Iowa. Carroll was the dominating figure throughout the game, scoring 2,0 of his points to lead the Boilermaker's into a 32-27 lead at the half. With the help of their leading player,, the Boilermakers rolled up a 19-point lead shortly before the end. Purdue, closing out its season at 23- 10, had only one other player in double figures, Keith Edmonson with 17 points. The Hawkeyes, finishing at 23-10, got 19 points from Kenny Arnold and 10 from Bob Hanson. Before Purdue broke open the game in the second half, the Big Ten teams were no more than six points apart. AP Photo Womnswimmers eighth at nationals The University of Michigan sent several members of its women's swim team to the AIAW championships this weekend on the campus of the Univer- sity of Nevada at Las Vegas. The team turned in a total of 56 points - good for 18th place in the National meet. The meet was won by Stanford, which edged out Texas by a score of 629 to 623. USC was third with 494 points, followed by Florida (443.5) and Arizona State 392.5. As usual, the. Michigan contingent was led by its strong diving team. In the one-meter event, Julie Bachman placed seventh with 381.55 and her diving mate Barb Weinstein was twelfth with 353.10.
