Subscribe Today 764-0558 Kevin McHale FT- II Tomjanovich might not play next year Trojans suspected LOS ANGELES (AP)-A University of Southern California official, rebut- ting a report in the school newspaper, said yesterday that no academic credit has been denied "on the basis of dishonest behavior" to any of 19 foot- ball players involved in a controversial speech class at the university. The Daily Trojan reported Wed- nesday that 18 of the players will not. receive credit for a "crash course" they took to make up for a speech class in which they were enrolled last fall but did not attend. The players were all members of the Trojans' Rose Bowl champions, including Heisman Trophy winner Charles White. THE STUDENT newspaper story, at- tributed to unnamed sources, reported that credit was denied for various reasons, including some cases where there were indications persons other than the players had taken the final examination for them. , The newspaper also said some of the players did not attend the "crash cour- se," and others were denied credit because their grades were too low. When it was revealed recently that 34 athletes enrolled in the course last fall had not attended classes, the university forced John DeBross, the debate coach who taught the course, to resign. Athletic academic coordinator Jeff. Birren was suspended at the time and later resigned. The "crash course" was given during Christmas vacation to allow those athletes who did not attend the fall speech classes to make up the work. HOUSTON (AP)-Houston Rockets forward Rudy Tomjanovich, one of the original players who came here with the National Basketball Association franchise nine years ago, says he may be playing his final season with the team. "A lot of people say this is the end of an era, an era that began when we came to Houston with Mike Newlin, Calvin Murphy, myself and all the other guys," said Tomjanovich, whose con- tract expires at the end of this season. "Almost all the old guys are gone now. The're's only me and Murf. They may very well want to sweep us all out and start from the beginning again." Tomjanovich, who has missed 20 of the Rockets games this season with various injuries, said it has been' a frustrating year. Tomjanovich said he had not thought about the contract he would seek with the Rockets or what he might get from another team. Rockets General Manager Ray Pat- terson says only that he looks forward to seeing Tomjanovich in a Rocket uniform next season.
