SLOW START FOR YOUNG TEAM: Blue base ballers back By BUDDY MOOREHOUSE Although the ground is still blanketed with snow and the temperature lately has been anything but warm, Michigan baseball has nevertheless begun. The Wolverines, under first year coach Bud Middaugh, have just returned from their annual spring trip to Lakeland, Florida, where they accumulated a 6-7 record. "ANY TIME YOU come back from a trip where you lost more games than you won, I don't really think it can be called a good trip," said Middaugh. "But I feel that we've come back as a better team than when we left." One of the main objectives of the trip was to give everyone a chance to play and see how well they perform, according to Middaugh. The lineup that Michigan used most frequently featured freshmen and sophomores starting at five out of the nine positions. Jeff Jacobson, a freshman from Glenview, Illinois, started for the Wolverines at second base, while Anthony Evans from Franklin, Ohio, and Garry Gawrch, from Great Falls, Virginia, also freshmen, shared the duty at shortstop and third base. Three freshmen pitchers, Vince Elam, Scott Dawson, and Steve Ontiveros also saw a lot of action. THE TWO SOPHOMORES who started are Tom Fredal in leftfield and Jim Paciorek in right. Paciorek, one of last year's steadiest hitters, was moved to the outfield from the third base position that he held last year. from trip The rest of the lineup had juniors Tim Miller at first base, Gerald Hool behind the plate, Greg Shulte and senior Charles Wagner sharing the duty in centerfield and Mark Clinton on the mound. Alternating between shortstop and third base for the Wolverines was last year's top hittet, George Foussianes. "GEORGE HAD A real good trip," said Middaugh. "He's just an outstanding player and an outstanding person." So with the warm weather and palm trees behind them now, the Michigan nine are looking forward to the start of the regular season, which starts March 29 with a home game against Grand Valley. Providing the snow disappears, that is. '- - -- HOUSING REAPPLICATION DRAWING .3 .-i.!lk By 1.J. SCHNEIDEK It is not unco mon for a coach to be optimistic at the start of the season. Before competition begins, most coaches have high expectations for their teams. Michigan golf coach Tom Simon is no exception. "They're a good group," said Simon. "There's no telling what.they can do." f his words lack any enthusiasm about 1he upcoming season, the persistent smile on his face certainly doesn't. Simion's eager attitude is based primarily on the performance of his l inksters last week. Originally, the team had .intended to hold practice in Atlanta. But after an unexpected snow storm snarled their plans, they settled for Jekyll Island,,Georgia. -The results of the rounds played last gie were used to determine ichigan's contingency for the Cape Coral Invitational, to be held March 26- 29 in Cape Coral, Florida. Among the qualifiers for the linksters' first tournament of the season are three newcomers to the Michigan squad. John Morse, the 1978 Michigan State Amateur champion, turned in the lowest score with 294 for 72 holes. Ed Humenik (302) and Mark DeWitt (307) also shot well enough to be considered as starters for the new season. Returning from last year's team are Steve Maddalena, Dave Fardig and captain Tom Pursel. While Cape Coral represents the first tournament of theBlue golfers' season, this is not necessarily the case for their prospective competition. Simon expects the field to be dominated by teams from southern schools, who can practice in the sun all winter while Michigans courses are blanketed with snow and ice. But the seemingly unfair odds facing his team do not appear to phase Simon. "They're gooagolfers," said Simon. "They're as solid a group as I've seen come out of Michigan in the last few years." And as he spoke of his squad, the smile never left his face. For students presently living in the residence halls who wish to return to the residence halls for the academic year 1980-81.
