Blue face Cavs i quarterfinals By DAVE JOHNSON With a pair of tournament victories under their belt, the Wolverines take to the road tonight for third round NIT action against the Virginia Cavaliers at Virginia's University Hall. A victory over Virginia (21-10) would thrust Michigan (17-12) into the semi- finals to be played early next week in Madison Square Garden. A defeat would bring them home-their season complete. And though Michigan is playing some of their best ball of the season, their chances of getting to New York City don't look very good; especially with a 4-10 road record. To add fuel to the fire, Virginia boasts a 12-1 home record, losing at University Hall only to highly- ranked Maryland by a basket. At seven-foot-four, who wouldn't be? And according to Wolverine assistant coach Bill Frieder, Sampson's the man they have to stop. "The game gets down to how well we contain him," said Frieder before Michigan took off for Charlottesville. "We know he's going to score, but we can't let him get second and third shots. "If we limit the number of shots he takes to 15-18," continued Frieder, 'we'll be all right.'' Although Sampson is touted as the next Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, his statisticshaven't yet reflected it. Averaging 14.2 points/10.9 rebounds per game, it still took Sampson his first four games of the season to score the 53 points (Lew Alcindor) scored in his initial college contest at UCLA. But according to sixth year Cavalier coach start the fast break." The main man in Virginia's backcourt, and the player who puts the 'gun' in their run-and-gun offense is 6-6 junior Jeff Lamp, the ACC's leading scorer last year. With the addition of Sampson's talents Lamp's scoring has suffered, dropping five points to 17.5 ppg. Quarterbacking the Cavalier attack is 6-4 sophomore Jeff Jones (6.7 ppg)-, the top assist man in the ACC the past two seasons. In Virginia's 57-55 NIT victory over Boston College Monday night, Jones dished off nine assists while turning the ball over only once in 40 minutes of play. Although forwards Garland Jefferson and Terry Gates are scheduled to start, Holland hopes to work in 6-5 junior Lee Baker, Virginia's third leading scorer at 13.5 ppg and 6-6 junior Mike Owens (10.0), both suffering with physical ailments. "Lee's been quite sick of late and has lost a lot of weight," said Holland. "He's still not at full strength, but he always gives 100 per cent regardless of the situation." Owens is suffering with an ulcer. "It's just wait and see wit him," concluded Holland. Michigan on the other hand will start the same five as they did in their earlier NIT wins. "We'll play our game," said Frieder. "We're not going to change much. We might be able to press and we might have to zone. "On offense, the biggest thing is to not challenge him (Sampson) by forcing jumpers and letting him come out of nowhere to block them." This is only the second time th4 Michigan has faced the Cavaliers; the first meeting 18 years ago resulted in a 66-52 Wolverine victory. It's also the first time that Michigan has played an Atlantic Coast Conference team in nine years. Their overall record against ACC teams is 7-9: 3-6 vs. Duke, 2-1 vs. Maryland, and 1-2 vs. North Carolina State. NIT NOTES: Michigan's last NIT appearance was in 1971 and ended as the Wolverines dropped a 78-70 decisi to Georgia Tech after beating Syracus 82-76 in the first round. Ranked 16th in the nation at the time and having an 81 per cent winning percentage on their own hardwood in the last 29 years, Michigan still beat the Warriors. But then, the Wolverines didn't have a 7-4 center with which to contend like they will tonight. Although he is far from a one-man team, freshman Ralph Sampson is the dominating force in Virginia's attack. Terry Holland, Sampson is coming on strong. "At first he just blocked shots and rebounded," said Holland. "He wasn't aggressive offensively. Now he's more relaxed and his shots are starting to drop," added Holland. "He's shooting 55 per cent." Sampson himself says he doesn't really worry about scoring. Murray State, -23-7, has a gaudier record than Illinois, 20-12, but the Illini have the advantage of coming out of the Big Ten wars, plus the home court with more than 16,000 fans. But Murray State already has stopped Jacksonville and Alabama on the road, while Illinois was beating homestate rivals Loyola- Chicago and Illinois State at home. Kevin McHale, the 6-foot-11 center f the Minnesota Gophers basketba team, recalls honorable mention All- America Andrew Toney of South- western Louisiana as a one-time tem- mate, and that's good for Coach Jim Dutcher. TONEY IS the nation's ninth leading college scorer with a 26.8 average. He will be tough for the Gophers to defense in a zone setup, said McHale, "because he has so much talent he is a challenge to anyone." 4 Dutcher said he's been advised "we're playing a great team." He said Abe Lemons, Texas coach whose team lost by one point to the Cajuns, "told me not to undersell them."
