He knows that if the second place Wolverines can sweep this weekend's opponent, fifth-place Notre Dame, and if third place Minnesota can top first place North Dakota, his icers are at the top of the WCHA. Two pretty big ifs, and neither con- dition is probable. The Fighting Irish carry a three game losing streak with them into Yost, a streak that dropped them from third place to fifth. On the other hand, the Irish also have a 6-4 road record, something that should aid them when they come up against Michigan's 16-0-1 home record. Michigan's hold on second place is tenuous at best right now. With teams like Minnesota and Notre Dame jockeying in and out of the top spots, it is likely that the next three weekends will remain crucial in determining home-ice advantage in the WCHA playoffs. As Farrell points out, nobody can rest securely on their laurels. "You think you're doing well, and then a team like Denver knocks you off. You can't let up for a minute. The pressure's on every day." And the pressure is on Michigan this weekend to uphold thei condition for reaching first place, or for maintaining a hold on second, for that matter. "I think we can hold this position provided a couple of things happen," said Farrell. "We can hold it if we stay healthy, and we can hold it if we beat Notre Dame." Two of the Irish the Wolverines have to keep their eyes peeled for are 6-1, 205- lb. forward Greg Meredith, and 6-2, 200- lb. defenseman Jeff Brownschidle. Meredith and Brownschidle both amassed six points in Notre Dame's ill- fated series with Minnesota-Duluth.* Meredith leads his team with 53 points, while Brownschidle has piled up 38 points and the third highest scorer for Notre Dame.
