U.S. hope Beth Heiden, who with her brother Eric head the American team's medal hopes in this Olympics,,finished seventh and said "I think it was just the press that thought I was going to be a lot higher. I wish I'd been a little more nervous. I was almost too relaxed. But I expected to finish right around sixth place, so I wasn't very disappointed." Beth and Eric have been the toast of the American Olympic team, but clearly, Eric is the much stronger medal contender. He opens his bid today in the 500 meters. He will compete in all five Olympic speed skating races. Beth is racing in all four women's events.
