Blue edge mlini, 78-76 By ALAN FANGER Michigan avoided a Valentine's Day heartbreak by clinging to a two-point lead in the final minute, and defeated Illinois, 78-76, last night before a sparse turnout of 9,738 at Crisler Arena. The most important aspect of the victory was its effect on the Wolverines' place in the Big Ten standings. After an evening which saw two major upsets (Northwestern defeating Purdue and Minnesota defeating Ohio State), Michigan now stands 7-6 in the conference, only one game behind four teams which are tied for the Big Ten lead. "It just positively amazes me, how we can come down to the wire like this in almost every game," said Wolverine coach Johnny Orr. "This team simply amazes me." The Wolverines had secured the game's final points with 1:27 left on two free throws-by Mike McGee, before a circus of ball exchanges commenced. During the dry spell, Michigan had no less than three chances to extend its lead to four points, while the Illini blew four attempts to tie the contest. Forward Eddie Johnson missed a long jump shot following a pair of free throws, and Johnny Johnson emerged from a crowd with the rebound. Three seconds and two time outs later, Mark Bodnar was called for an offensive foul when he crashed into Illini guard Perry Range following the inbound pass. In a somewhat surprising maneuver, Illinois coach Lou Henson encouraged his team to shoot immediately rather than play for one shot in the final seconds. Johnson once again took the shot, but the ball sailed high off the glass and into the flailing arms of Thad Garner. Then it was Garner's turn to prolong the tension which has recurred in almost every game the Wolverines have played. While dribbling carefully among four Illini, he was fouled by Gray. The 6-7 sophompre missed the front end of a one-and-one situation, and further compounded his frustrations when he was whistled for climbing up Mark Smith's back. Smith, on the other hand, proved to be no cool cookie himself. Big Ten free throw shooter, his charity toss sailed off the mark. Mike McGee reached out to grab a baseball pass at the other end, but his left foot managed to find the end line. Illinois had seven seconds in which to tie the game and produce yet another overtime situation. Gray took the inbound pass, dribbled to his left, and took a jump-shot from about 15 feet. The ball caromed sharply off the outer rim, where Paul Heuerman was in perfect position to hold onto it for dear life and preserve one more in a series of nip-and-tuck victores. "We tried to isolate Gray and see if he could get a good shot," explained Hen- son. "We wanted him to take it." "We had a lot of opportunities at the end," he continued. "I thought we took, the high-percentage shot. The shots just have to fall for you to win." "We got the last four rebounds. That was the key thing," said an emotionally drained but elated Orr. "We sucked it up and played good defense down the stretch." The second half was a sharp contrast to the first stanza, which saw both teams fast breaking and maintaining a frenzied tempo. Illinois trailed the en- tire way, but they never drifted far behind, and headed into the locker room at halftime trailing by only three, 47-44. In the first seven minutes, Heuerman was successful in isolating on cent James Griffin, the player who hounde the Wolverines inside throughout their 80-69 loss in Champaign four weeks ago. Henson soon decided to replace Griffin with Derek Holcomb, but the Michigan pivotman continued to hit from a favorite spot along the baseline. It wasn't until the second half that the in- side began to cave in on the 6-8 junior; he mustered only one bucket in the final twenty minutes. The cagers' next Big Ten battle curs tomorrow night, when they meet Michigan State in Jenison Field House in East Lansing.
