Janssen suffered the attack at his Malibu home, said ac- tor Stuart Whitman, a longtime friend who happened to be driving by about 4:30 a.m. on his way to his ranch in Santa Barbara.x WHITMAN STOPPED when he saw an ambulance and a fire truck outside the Janssen home. He went inside and saw paramedics summoned by Janssen's wife trying to revive the actor. "They had taken him out of bed and were working on him, and working on him," Whitman said. "It must have been half an hour altogether. One of them then said, 'I think I've got a heartbeat.' and they took him to the hospital." Janssen was pronounced dead at Santa Monica Hospital. THE DEATH CAME as a shock to friends and colleagues. Janssen's agent and manager of 21 years, Abner Greshler, said Janssen had "no history whatsoever" of heart problems and that his doctor "is in just as much of a state of shock as we are." Producer Jean Moore Edwards said Janssen had started work on a television film, "Fater Damian," about a leper priest in Hawaii only two days earlier. Janssen was born David Meyer on March 27, 1931, in Naponee, Neb. His parents divorced when he was young and his mother brought him to Hollywood, where he made his film debut at age nine in "Swamp Fire," portraying the brother of Johnny Weissmuller. Janssen, who took his stage name from his stepfather, appeared in numerous movies as a young man before making his dent in television playing the title role in the detective series "Richard Diamond" from 1957 to 1960. But it was "The Fugitive" that made him a bona fide star. From 1963 to 1967 he played the role of Richard Kimball, who was accused of killing his wife but who eluded authorities week after week as he sought the shadowy one- armed man who had really committed the murder. 06 i . ' I -= k From AP and UPI VANCOUVER, Wash.-FBI agents armed with sifting screens and accompanied by a backhoe conducted a $200,000 treasure hunt along the Columbia River yesterday, seeking more of a mysterious hijacker's loot, and maybe the remains of D.B. Cooper' himself. The first money from Cooper's haul was found Sunday on a sandy beach on the north shore of the Columbia five miles northwest of Vancouver, Wash., by children on a family outing. It totaled about $3,000 and the serial numbers checked matched numbers on the bills given Cooper. A GAPING PIT, about 20 yards from the water's edge, showed the spot where Brian Ingram found the three packages of bills on Sunday. On Tuesday, agents digging as deep as three feet came up with more bits and pieces of $20 bills from the spot that obviously is sometimes under water as the river level fluctuates. Any would-be treasure seekers were barred from the area by a sheriff's deputy and a locked gate. The only spectators were three local fishermen, a crowd of reporters and a herd of dairy cattle that munched away in a pen a hundred yards from the digging. The mystery of what happened to the man who hijacked a Northwest Airlines Boeing 727 on Thanksgiving eve 1971, appeared little closer to solution. THE FLIGHT had originally left Portland, Ore. Once it was in the air, the hijacker, who had signed on the flight as Dan Cooper,' displayed what appeared to be a bomb and demanded the money and four parachutes. The passengers and two flight attendants were let off in Seattle and the remainder of the crew was locked in the cockpit. Somewhere over southwest Washington, the man who has come to be known as D.B. Cooper disappeared out the back entrance with the money and a parachute. Until Sunday, nothing had been seen of any of the three.' With the real identity of Cooper still unknown, it is the only unsolved hijacking in the@ nation. Religion to be draft AT HIGHLAN ASK FOR THEM AT N JGNL FRE SVE V 3.-GET 2 ' _n SHOW OR B . Brayton Harris, spokesman for the Selective Service System, said yesterday that unlike previous drafts when there were many exemptions and deferments, the only automatic exemption under Carter's proposal would be "minister of religion." 0 THAT DOESN'T mean, however, that there won't be some other exemptions. "The theory is that any deferements and exemptions should be granted on the merits of the individual case, such as hardship or conscientious objector," Harris said. "There will be no student deferments, no occupational deferments and no automatic deferments for family status, such as. having children. "The only automatic exemption will be for minister of religion." Local draft boards will make the decisions about exemptions and deferments, Harris said. PRESIDENT CARTER sent Congress a report this week outlining his decision to call for the resumption of draft registration.
