When the final buzzer sounded on Sunday and the Wolverines had preserved a grueling 5-4 victory, the Huskies from Houghton became the sixth WCHA team to emerge from Ann Arbor without a victory, extending Michigan's overall home record to 16-0- 1. The weekend sweep of Michigan Tech solidifies the icer's hold on second place the WCHA (12-7-1) and bolsters their rall record to a sparkling 21-8-1. After a rousing, come-from-behind victory in overtime Saturday night before a capacity crowd, the Wolverines changed their tack from a somewhat defensive posture the night before to a style of play more charac- teristic of the team this year: unbridled aggression.' For the first two periods the Wolverine attack consisted mainly of h ad-manning the puck quickly, dum- g it into the Huskie zone, and crashing the boards. The benefits of this offensive style manifested them- selves first when Michigan burst into a' 2-0 lead in the final four minutes of the first period, and continued, boosting the Wolverines to a 4-2 second stanza ad- vantage. "'We changed some things today (Sunday)," said Michigan Coach Dan Farrell. "We worked the puck deep, ereas yesterday we worked the plays m the point. You've got to be aggressive when you play these guys or you'll get blown away." "Aggressive" was indeed the key word as twenty-six minutes of roughing penalties were handed out to the two teams in the first two periods. The main event erupted at 3:25 of the second period when Joe Milburn of Michigan and Todd Scott of the Huskies squared off in the Tech end, igniting a free-for- that resulted in three players from h side being sent off for a total of sixteen minutes. In the end, the alter- cation was less a brawl than a group disrobing that saw Milburn stripped of his gloves, helmet and jersey. The Wolverines came out slow in the final period,,however, and Michigan Tech deadlocked the game at four with a pair of goals within the first four minutes. Huskie defenseman Jeff John- ston netted his second goal of the day, when he snapped a fifteen-foot wrist shot past Blue goalie Paul Fricker's glove hand at 0:55. Less than two minutes later Fricker was again beaten to his right, this time by the Huskies' junior Swede, Per-Ake Johansson, to tie it. He scored the winning goal in overtime on Saturday, and set up the winner on Sunday, compiling a series total of two goals and three assists. Lerg has gone far toward filling the void created by a half-speed Murray Eaves (mononucleosis). Another bright spot in the Wolverine picture has been the increasing offen- sive effectiveness of defenseman Steve Richmond. He was the perpetrator. of the prettiest tally of the game in the second period when he zig-zagged his way through a Tech forward and two defensemen at the Huskie blue line, and shifted past a fooled Darcy Way. Farrell was pleased but not sur- prised. "We see Steve do that sort of thing all the time in practice. He stickhandles very well." BLUE LINES: With one assist during his limited icetime Sunday, Eaves con- tinues to lead the Wolverines in scoring with 74 pts. Baseotto and Lerg are close behind with 65 and 64 respectively. Eaves is questionable again for the Notre Dame series next weekend at Yost. According to Farrell, the sophomore center's status will be determined day to dy. Goalie Paul Fricker notched his second assist of the season Sunday, as he directed the puck to John Blum who, in turn, sent Rich- mond on his dance through the Huskie defense. Yost, the Wolverines came up with just the' ingredients they needed to win as, just three minutes later, left winger Gordie Hampson trickled a Dan Lerg rebound past Tech's bewildered nret- minder, Darcy Way. Hampson's timely tap, some solid goaltending by Fricker, and a costly hold by Tech's Mark Palkovich at 17:15 combined to pave the rocky road the Wolverines traveled to their weekend sweep. (UPI)-A less than fond farewell to Michigan fans at Ann Arbor, Mich., last weekend has earned. University of Wisconsin forward Claude Gregory a place on the bench. . Coach Bill Cofield' said yesterday Gregory will not start Thursday night against Michigan State in a disciplinary action. Gregory fouled out of the game Saturday against Michigan and made" obscene gesture at fans, which he er apologized for to reporters. "It's not something to share with the media or the public," Cofield told the Milwaukee Sentinel. He said Gregory will practice with the second string all week. Gregory has discussed the matter with Athletic Director Elroy Hirsch and written a letter of apology to Michigan Coach Johnny Orr and his players. fNC 60, Ga.
